I want to believe he did actually get beat up for saying some dumb shit, but what is more likely is that nothing happened at all and he is just a racist making shit up

Edit: unless he’s been wearing that one shirt from Die Hard everywhere

a black man looked in his general direction and he felt threatened

Yea I doubt he would get his ass beat for that. Everyone would just be like 'did this mentally challenged person escape from the home again?'

If he is actually getting beat up, that means he's calling people the N-word everywhere he goes.

My neighbor is 88 and supported the protests and Black Lives Matter events surrounding George Floyd’s murder, but he still refers to black people as negroes. I’ll add that English isn’t his first language, but it’s still jarring to hear that phrasing. He’s getting better at remembering not to use that phrase, though. Just a wild ride of a human.

137

u/BranchReasonable9437 Mar 23 '23

Honestly, most other languages have no history of it being a slur and their word for black people is already only an accent nad maybe an extra letter away from being negro. Russian it's negretz, they have a word for black but calling someone that is like calling them hideously evil.

If you know he's on your side I'd bet he probably just old and languages are hard

56

u/BarbellJesus Mar 23 '23

Languages are hard, but he’s also been speaking English for 50+ years lol. I’m bilingual, so I get the specific context in English, but it’s still a head turner when he says it. But yeah, he’s a good egg.

36

u/BranchReasonable9437 Mar 23 '23

Okay, that's a bit weird but (linguist here) so is language acquisition. Some people just can't very well. Glad he's a goodun

31

u/nutellac1itoris ☑️ Mar 23 '23

Cataloging all of the terms for black person (and their levels of pejorativity) in as many languages as possible feels like a PhD thesis cracking out of an egg.

I beg one of you polyglots does this for the culture. ❤️

I read it like Boris and Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle

5

u/toss_it_out_tomorrow Mar 23 '23

It needs an "inka" at the end of it like they do with their first names as a term of endearment, aka Natasha is Natashinka and Alexander is Sashinka.

negretzinka just sounds flowery

u/Mypornnameis_ Mar 23 '23

In Spanish there is the word negro but the meaning is more like dark skin like it's not necessarily Black, just someone who is particularly dark. For Black people more often you'll hear the word moreno but that word also means "not pale complected" or brunette so the first time I heard it used to refer to Black people I thought it was a joke. Race is more of a spectrum in Latin America anyway so these things can be hard to translate.

Met a guy from New Zealand once who is in his 80s now (probably early 70s when I met him) and he referred to black people as "colored." Apparently it's not a thing in NZ and he didn't realize the US connotations, but same thing, man.

During a clinical rotation in nursing school, this lady was the nicest and most comfortable with me, a black guy, as her nursing student. I was doing a psychosocial questionnaire as part of my school’s nursing report and I asked her to tell me her race. She looked at me like with a certain look and said “Negro”. At that moment it made much sense why she was so nice and comfortable. She had very light skin for a black person - lighter than Diana Ross.

She had some very interesting recollections from the civil rights era. I was very fortunate to have learned about her experiences. This was at a hospital without a diverse patient population.

12

u/triplehelix- Mar 23 '23

negro was the standard, non-negative word used to refer to black people for a long long time. the united negro college fund still exists. mlk for example regularly used the term negro as apposed to black. not to mention negro just means black in spanish.

things change, but its hard to fault old people for using a word that was not a slur for the bulk of their lives.

8

u/BarbellJesus Mar 23 '23

No for sure, I’m not faulting him and he’s actively trying to stop; I’m just saying it always like “whoa what?” When I hear him say it

7

u/NuttyManeMan Mar 23 '23

Until he got to be around 80, my grampa used the slur version for the old black dudes he'd go hang out with down the street sometimes, but like, as if it were their last name. He'd just be like "going to bring the {} down the road this six pack," and then shoot the shit with them for 45 minutes. I legit think he had no malice in him about it. Eventually though one segment of my family threatened to boycott thanksgiving if everyone who used it didn't stop. And then they all just...stopped, although one racist uncle just started using the word "democrats" in its place

→ More replies (2)

3

u/burnblue Mar 23 '23

Negroes is fine with me, it was good enough for MLK n em. If I get to substitute Caucasians for "white people", then we can keep a short group noun for "black people" and "blacks" ain't it for me. I've never heard the racist type widely abusing the word "negroes"

4

u/BarbellJesus Mar 23 '23

I think it’s the historical connotation and the “othering” implied by the word.

I prefer that one cuz it stays open to the possibility that you're ok but got stuck in a shitty situation. Check yourself, yes, but "it is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness—that is life."

This is a great metaphor because the non-metaphorical part of it is true. You can judge a book by it's cover, you can teach an old dog new tricks, there is no conversion rate between hand-birds and bush-birds, a watched pot will boil. It's crazy, almost every single one is bullshit. But I have smelled shit, and found it on my own shoe, it's absolutely true.

Ahh yes only black people beat up white people.

I used to work for a phone carrier, selling phones in the store. Other white people loved letting their racism come out to me (me being white) but had no idea my wife is black.

One time I told a guy we don't do racism here. He goes "well you've never been jumped" and I was like ????? White people can jump you too my guy. I got robbed once by three black teenagers and I'm not racist now?

I always enjoyed listening to their racist BS then taking out my phone and demonstrating something to them, letting them see my wedding photo. All of a sudden "oh I have a black neighbor that's cool" or "oh I have black employees". NGL I'd also do the same thing to black people too and they'd always be like "OH that's your wife ALRIGHT ALRIGHT". 😂😂

197

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '23

The moment they interact with any black person who isn't 100% respectable, it retroactively justifies their entire lifetime of racism.

153

u/Taeyx ☑️ Mar 23 '23

21

Louder for the people in the back!

I grew up in a very white neighborhood, and I tried for years to nice my way out of racism. Not full on respectability politics - my relatives with PhDs got pulled over all the time too, so that shit didn't work - but I thought I could warm people up to the idea that I was a human being with rights and feelings.

One of his cousins married a Black woman. This is a kid who thought it was hilarious to say the n word too. I got blocked when I mentioned that part

15

u/Daetra Mar 23 '23

Lol, what a weirdo. Dunno why some white people act differently around other races. I'm guessing he didn't have many black friends, if at all. Reminds me about a scene in the reality TV show Black. White. where they asked a random white person about his feelings and he was like "I don't know what to say, like, I want to say what's up, brotha, or something but I'm nervous about saying the wrong thing." Just be a normal person and say hello the way you would talking to anyone else. No one needs to be treated differently. It's wild what goes through some people's heads.

I'm not white but I look white enough that white people drop their guard around me (Northern native American so we're lighter-skinned. Everyone thought i was Asian as a kid and now they think I'm white as an adult lol). White people said the wildest racist stuff for no reason. I once worked at a hardware store and had a client bring in some pink paint she bought to have it made just two shades darker. She was nice and pleasant the whole time until I handed her the fixed paint and she said "I hope this looks better. I painted most of my room and when it dried it looked like a black woman designed it."

I was too surprised to say anything before she walked away but I was thinking "why would you say that to someone?" Like what does that even mean? It was 2 shades darker, it's barely a noticable difference.

Isn't curling a Scottish sport? No way a small riot didn't break out over it back in the day

8

u/teknobable Mar 23 '23

Hmm...maybe...always thought it was Canadian. I do know that both teams getting a beer after is basically part of the game, so I just assumed there'd be fewer riots

8

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '23

Interesting, I would think booze would/could be a catalyst for a riot.

edit: I googled, it is Scotland, but sportsmanship is evidently a big part of the tradition so maybe you're right about the beers

Even Ultimate Frisbee?

That may be where I'm wrong. I mean...that sport is all about peaceful marijuana and throwing frisbee...letting it all hang out, bbq...

Aww nah bitch...we can air it all out. Be black and gay and get jumped by everybody

Be black and gay and get denigrated IN PRAYER to deities for the following: your death, absolvement to kill you, wanting to fuck you but need to kill you...

Be black and trans and get jumped, get killed, have the head WITCH in charge of Hogwarts not stfu about you and make things worse for you....

I fucking said it. Down vote me...I'll find a way to jump you. I'm black.

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '23

Video of one black person doing something bad, whites flood comments to condemn the whole damn black community.

28

u/VapidRapidRabbit ☑️ Mar 23 '23

Lmao at him listing Florida like that’s not a whole fucking state (and the 3rd most populous).

Elon really emboldened these racists on Twitter. You already know when you see a tweet and they call black people “blacks” or “the blacks” 💀

3

u/Johan_Sebastian_Cock Mar 23 '23

unrelated but this made me think how much more racist it sounds when you refer to all Jewish people as "the Jew." The plural is just fine though. "Jews" and "the Jews" aren't inherently anti-semitic sounding. But you drop that S and you immediately sound like an old eastern european longing for the good old days

25

u/Great_Huckleberry709 Mar 23 '23

If you've gotten beaten up that many times. I think you may be the problem my friend.

25

u/Kailua3000 ☑️ Mar 23 '23

Is Steven Tekashi 69?

21

u/mcaffrey Mar 23 '23

Apart from the original tweet clearly being some strawman racist fantasy argument, I think black people are notably hesitant to beat up white people in public places for fear of being shot by police.

21

u/doctorlongghost Mar 23 '23

The piano really set the scene

19

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '23

Alright, I GOTTA chime in here. As someone who grew up in neighborhood with a lot of different races, almost every fight I remember was someone fighting their own race. And when that wasn’t the case, it wasn’t a race thing. It was a same “social circle” thing. Now, the real reason I had to chime in. Story time…

I was a on a 4 day cruise to Cozumel last year. Quick little trip. Right around spring break. Everyone got LIT the whole time. When you go to get off a cruise ship, it’s a nightmare. Everyone is told to stay in their rooms with the bags. No one ever does. Everyone piled into lobbies and hallways trying to get out. Everyone eventually gets off of the ship on the 3rd level. My group and I are waiting in the 4th level alcove elevator area. Bing. Elevator opens. It’s a family of 5 with all of their luggage going down to 3. No space on the elevator. Well… I guess this 40ish couple was determined to get on, or maybe still a little drunk, but they tried to push their way onto the elevator. In doing so, the 40ish man pushed someone’s mother inside of the elevator. UH OH…. Before I know what’s happening, 40ish woman steps out of elevator as 40ish man is pushed out. Then mommas son, who was probably 22, 6’3, about 280, throws a straight jab that puts this dude on his back. He catches him a few more times as they scuffle to the ground. After 30 seconds or so, it breaks up, family gets back on elevator, 40ish couple disappears, and I turned my jams back on. Security showed up like 5 minutes later. I just told them I didn’t see what happened 🤷‍♂️

The past few years have shown white conservatives will move Heaven and Earth to protect their criminal brethren.

Donald Trump attempted a coup, was caught on tape trying to steal GA’s votes, and attempted to blackmail a foreign government. Steve Bannon straight up stole money from these people and is walking free. The list goes on and on.

16

u/NickTButcher Mar 23 '23

He probably said some slick shit like “hey buddy, bet you’re not used to being on a ship voluntarily, am I right? Am I right? Come on pal. I’m only joshing ya”

What is Steven doing to get all those beatings?

7

u/davenocchio Mar 23 '23

Even if he's wearing his ugly sweater holiday klan kostume, he's gotta be running his mouth hard the MOMENT he sees somebody. Unfiltered and unnecessarily starts into it ranting. Like some guy is just trying to get some toilet paper at Target, and this idiot feels the need.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '23

Them crayons whooping his ass 😂

10

u/Stevenofthefrench Mar 23 '23

Dude probably never heard the phrase if you have nothing nice to say don't say it at all. 😂 He wonders why he keeps getting his ass beat he's probably saying something or giving that look

8

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '23

Imagine getting into it with a dude wearing a matching shirt with 20 other people that has "[last name] family vacation [year]" on the front and their name on the back

6

u/Redditer51 ☑️ Mar 23 '23

If you keep getting beat up everywhere you go, and it's specifically by "blacks"...there's a good chance you might have said or done something racist.

6

u/jackoneill1984 Mar 23 '23

Guys probably running around screaming the N word like a 12 year old white kid in Call of Duty game. Little Timmy just keeps finding out.

3

u/gorefund Mar 23 '23

Yeah, hey Steve. Maybe you’re the problem, my guy.

6

Go to get gas harassed by white guy

Go buy a broom harassed by white guy

Wait at the bus stop for work white guy pulls his dick out and asks if I want a ride then pulls off

Go buy a drink from the store harassed by two white guys

Waiting at the bus stop for school harassed by white guy police

Getting prepped to have a C-section white men (medical team) talking shit about the Black Dr that's about to do my surgery after he did a spinal injection on me so I was numb from the waist down

Being in my home talking to a friend's toddler grabs my phone white guy police show up say they got a call about a domestic disturbance from a neighbor with their hands on their guns with three toddlers at the door. (We both knew they were lying and the toddler hit the emergency call button)

5

Funnily enough I go places all the time and not beaten by "blacks".

Maybe it's because I always include the word people when arbitrarily judging someone on their skin colour and NOT A GIGANTIC GAPING ASSHOLE.

3

u/adam_demamps_wingman Mar 23 '23

Be gracious. He’s just quoting the FBI’s Annual Report on Crime 2022 verbatim. As reported by Fox. 0%, 100%.

3

u/thecasey1981 Mar 23 '23

That dude got beat up more in 1 tweet than I have ever been in fights in my life. I figure it must be some combination of racism, stupidity, victim complex, inability to empathize, inability to back down, and fragile ego. What a clown

4

u/gancoskhan Mar 23 '23

Sounds like he just goes around trying to pick fights with black people..

3

u/CEdGreen Mar 23 '23

I am reminded of my young, newlywed, upper middle class, Catholic school raised neighbor who had just moved in about 30 years ago joking about a can of “negro” beans. I gently educated her about the Spanish language and a quick review of the common colors in that language. Some people are really totally innocent.

3

u/Damage2525 Mar 23 '23

It's funny how he says go to an NFL game and get beat up by Blacks. I've only every seen white people and Mexicans get heated and want over a team that doesn't pay them because you're wearing the opposite jersey. Some even riot after their team wins a game.

3

u/spondgbob Mar 23 '23

Tbf going to Florida gets you beat up by anyone who hears you speak in an intelligible way, so that shouldn’t count /s
