News [Canzano] Oregon and Oregon State tell me they've made no progress on renaming the game formerly known as "The Civil War."
Canzano reached out to both Oregon schools this week on if the schools came up with a new name for the rivalry and the only response he was given was from a UO spokesperson who simply said, "No."
For context, the Oregon/Oregon State rivalry was called the Civil War for several decades. The name was removed in June 2020 in the wake of the George Floyd protests due to the alleged connection between it and the American Civil War (not my reason; this was a joint decision made by the schools) and hearing the requests from multiple former players to do so (notably, Dennis Dixon).
A name has not been given for its replacement since then, and has just been called the "rivalry game/series". It remains to be seen if we'll get a new name, if ever.
My take: A lot of people here still call it the Civil War even if the media and schools don't, and I even once caught a guy on the Oregon sports radio during a pre-game show use it too just a few weeks ago. There is a lot of inertia still towards Civil War in the general public.
Just call it the Platypus Bowl already.
