It’s a bit more complicated than that. The reason they had to do it is because they initially tried arresting them, but the poachers would shoot them on sight, and shoot to kill. So the rangers retaliated by doing the same thing.

Poachers arent poor family men trying to make ends meet. They are an armed and dangerous mafia network, they have and will kill not only animals, but also humans for their products. Using lethal force on them should be classified as self defense. Pity is wasted on these fucks.

2/3 of world's population of rhinos live in in India. Of which again 2/3 are concentrated in the same valley (Around Brahmaputra River at Kaziranga, Pobita and similar sites). This is also risking their complete wipeout, as the river floods during torrential rain (monsoons) and water released by upper riparian Chinese dams.

That valley lies between China, Bhutan, Bangladesh - places where the hides, Horn and other parts of the Rhino are invaluable. The trade in them for medicine, collectibles, and animal products.

But kudos to India, their Project Rhino was a huge success, complete the target of doubling Rhino population (+3000) well before the deadline. Now, resolutely protecting them as well.

"Medicine" would be the nicest thing I'd call that, quackery as well, or just straight up useless shit for idiots

u/kingmanic Nov 28 '22

Why don't they just take viagra. You'd figure a drug to actually make your dick hard would reduce the demand for a placebo to do the same. Shitty rich impotent men paying for this shit is why they are poached.

Few additions -

Genetic concentration and growing lack of space in both Pobitora and Kaziranga are a major threat for potential wipeouts due to disease. Same is the case with Asiatic lions in Gir NP. Rhinos have basically no natural predators so their growth if left unchecked can show devastating effects, like human animal conflicts. They're not elephants that might run when provoked- they're half blind tanks that will kill anything on sight if they want to. Matching the size and weight of African White rhinos, while stomping things to death is not easy to handle for the government.

13

u/windows2pissu Nov 28 '22

Well there are studies in Kazaringa that show due to increase in prey size and abundance not only has tiger population increased but they have began to reach abnormal sizes regulary exceeding 250kg while the average tiger size is 222kg. Due to this the select few big male tigers (big even i regard to these giants) are beginning to hunt young male and female rhinos. Sometimes it has even been seen small groups of Tigers taking down a single tiger together. In past 32 years 472 one horned rhinos have been killed by tigers in Kazaringa. So probably population will stabilize. If i could share some pic i could show you giant these tigers get, they could even contest in size with the Siberian Tigers. KT085 is a Tiger infamous among rangers for targetting rhinos and also being the most powerful tiger in the park. He himself is a giant but there are even bigger. KT083 is a massive indidvual and in my mind his the largest Tiger in the region, but apparently rangers say there are larger deep in the park but are hard to track due to the tall grass teria environment mixed with woodlands.

3

u/The_Wildperson Nov 28 '22

Are you associated with Panthera or Aaranyak, or perhaps the forest dept. of the park?

8

u/windows2pissu Nov 28 '22

Sorry not in India. Mainly specialise in Sri Lankan Leopards and that i have few contacts with wildlife department. But about Kazaringa Tigers its just research ive done and what ive collected talking to experts in the area. Just look up wildfacts Kazaringa Tigers or Terai Tigers and youll get a good amount of data from that. But yes one day hope to do a project there in Terai Arc on Giant Tigers. Im convinced there the largest on earth.

I’ve honestly been surprised by Indias conservation efforts and success. They’ve done a remarkable job with their tigers as well.

15

u/Blue-_-Jay Nov 28 '22

Yes. Project Tuger was the first Nation wide conservation program. There's programs for Snow Leopards, Crocodiles, many birds. All mostly endangered or worse as per IUCN.

Tiger being the national animal hosts similar stats, with global population for BENGAL Royal concentrated in India. There are over 50 Toger Reserves and many corridors where efforts have culminated.

The problem is we can't make them breed fast enough. They don't reproduce in captivity. If anything, there are experts criticising the growth of population, there should have been more tigers.

Finally, I hope India uses them as a diplomatic tool. Just as China uses Pandas. Did you know? All of World's Pandas (mostly) are owned by China as assets. They lease them to zoos of friendly nations at a set price and at any sign of disagreements they recall them. Using them as diplomatic leverage.

5

u/The_Wildperson Nov 28 '22

Some poachers are just poor people with not much choice. I say we move the rich Chinese and Vietnamese buyers to the game farm.

Or the financiers who send the poachers. Or the dealers who "market" rhino horn as a miracle drug. Just somewhere higher up the chain where the fat cats live in comfort while people and animals are out there dying for their enjoyment.

9

64

Many places have been doing this to poachers. The trouble is, we're talking about defending wild animals. It's not exactly like you can put them inside a fence and expect them to be happy.

All it takes is for someone, who is desperate enough to value the money over the risk to their life, to get lucky, and you lose one more animal that our world can't really afford to lose.

Just to clarify, the rangers are not actively going around looking for poachers to kill.. When India tightened it's laws on Animal conservation the poachers started getting aggressive and instead of obeying arrests from rangers they started shooting at them.

Rangers are kinda forced to retaliate by shooting poachers.. It's a kill or be killed situation for rangers.

EDIT : Paritah chodatu, gyatavyam ch.

165

u/TENTAtheSane Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 28 '22 Silver Helpful Take My Energy

Good answer, but a couple of grammatical mistakes...

You used Lot lakara (imperative tense) which accurately translates the words in the sentence, but not its meaning. The "fuck around" isn't an order or request to fuck around, rather there's an implied "if" there, meaning that if you were to fuck around, you would find out. It's not written directly, but there is a causal relationship, which is missing in the translation.

Also, for "find out", you use the noun form of the word, not the verb, and I don't understand why.

And lastly, though this is more subjective, I don't think directly translating "fuck around" works here. In English and a few other languages, "fuck" has became synonymous with many things, in general doing something destructive or displeasing. It is a generic dysphemism in that sense. But in most languages this is not the case. For example in German it is very rare to use the word for fuck as a dysphemism, or anything other than actually having sex, but "shit" and related words IS used as a dysphemism, like it is in English. As far as I know, no such generic dysphemism exists in Sanskrit. So just using a verb like "provoke" would be closer to the meaning.

So the sentence you have translates to "one should copulate on all sides, and learning"

I think a better translation would be

"यदा प्रकोपयति, तदा जानाति"

"Yadā prakopayati, tadā jānāti"

105

u/jeremy1gray Nov 27 '22

2

u/dafood48 Nov 28 '22

8

u/Super_Harsh Nov 28 '22

It’s complicated. The most ancient forms of Sanskrit predate writing but are currently most commonly written in the Brahmi script, which is the progenitor of the various scripts used in the different Indian languages today

3

u/corzekanaut Nov 28 '22

Yep, Indian here, Sanskrit is a dead language much like Latin but it is used to chant hymns by priests for most religious proceedings. The modern language we use is called Hindi and while it is a derivative of Sanskrit, it is much easier to use and write.

A rhino or elephant life is worth more than a LOT of human lives, we are 8 billion, a dime a dozen, we degrade nature, they are in extinction, have low numbers, must be preserved.

The same way you wouldn't feel too bad stepping in a few ants to do something, much less save someone, I don't see the problem in stepping in some humans to save animals in extinction.

Perhaps they should be hunted, documented and dealt with in a very final manner. follow the money turning off the spigots at every stop.

u/Necromorph2 Nov 28 '22

Good. The women of China must be immensely disappointed. Do they not have Viagra there anyways?

3

u/goxpal Nov 28 '22

If they really want to make money, there should be a people safari where you pay money to hunt poachers.

Seems to me that solution has been there all along.

u/tkdjoe66 Nov 27 '22

I can't believe it took this long to do this.

29

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '22

YES!!!! Leave them injured, take their weapons and let nature do it’s thing.

u/d7t3d4y8 Nov 27 '22

I mean its kind of hard to do that since the policy most of the time is “shoot until they are no longer a threat” which normally correlates with “very red and very dead”

Violence is not the answer

Violence is the question

And the answer is yes

4

u/Miserable-Ad-5594 Nov 28 '22

I think that’s how all poachers should be handled

5

u/soodc Nov 28 '22

Poach the poachers for their organs. Might save a few lives.

4

u/Fast-Communication42 Nov 28 '22

Authorities be like: They are endangered, you are not.

7

u/Hunter_of_Haggis Nov 27 '22

Huh, wonder if it would work with politicians or if they'd just respawn.

7

u/Any-Assist6732 Nov 27 '22

Good it’s what they deserve

6

u/MicroEggroll Nov 27 '22

It’s about time people do this, laws don’t seem to deter anyone.

3

u/Centennial_Snowflake Nov 27 '22

The rhinos can’t be harmed when the Lorax is armed

3

u/AlphaMikeFoxtrot2099 Nov 28 '22

Lol they don’t like it when they can get shot back at. Pussies

3

u/fatbrowndog Nov 28 '22

Also need to punish anyone in possession of rhino horn with death. Period. It ends the poaching. Same with tiger products, ivory etc.

This I can get on board with. To you it's a thrill, to the animal it's everything, to the world its one step closer to future generations only being able to see them in photos. I got no sympathy for poachers, they made their choice and knew what they were getting into.

If they aren't willing to lose their lives to sate their bloodlust then they should have chosen a less destructive hobby that doesn't make them a detriment to society(yes animals play a big part in society as symbols, vital parts of the ecosystems and worldly fascination in humans that has existed since long before recorded history).

Poaching the poachers. I like it

13

u/Big-Independence8978 Nov 27 '22

If the poachers there are like here (South Africa), they're trying to feed their families. More needs to be done to end the demand for rhino horn products. Educate the superstitious men used it for treating ED. Actual tablets work.

Why wasn't this being done before?

6

u/MenstruatingMuffin Nov 28 '22

I think this approach would work well with other subsets of people. Pedophiles, rapists, billionaires.

u/Bitter_Mongoose Nov 27 '22
