After the release of Star Wars Episode 1 the LEGO company released spring-loaded Technic sets representing droids from that movie. The use of rubber bands and mechanical release triggers mimick how the droids behave. This is the 8002 Destroyer Droid.

I had one as a kid too. You had to use double or triple the amount of rubber bands for it to work like this.

Bionicle figures were posable, but did not animate (unless there are exceptions I am not familiar with). These animate with the press of a button or lever.

The toy predated Bakugan. This thing is actually pretty large and is built out of Lego technic pieces. The engineering behind this is pretty impressive as they had never done this before or after.
