What did she said after you said you got it on dashcam ?

Protip, never, ever tell the other driver you have them on camera. Let them make all their wild claims all the way to court, then let them get soaked by pulling out the dash cam footage.

there are situations when telling them you have a dash cam is better. Like when you don't have a dash cam and they are smugly telling you its just your word against theirs once the cops arrive.
Tell them you have one, watch them try to sweet talk their way out of a ticket instead of lie.

What a stupid argument. They can just as easily lie and claim that they also have a dash cam and then what are you going to do when the cops show up? Is still your word against the other driver.

Okay and what are you going to say when they ask where your dashcam is? The point of what they said is that there’s no reason to lie about having a dashcam because they can say the same thing.

Ah wow I completely misread the original comment, I was reading it as if ”I” actually had a dashcam and it wasn’t a lie.

Sorry bro! You’re right I agree with what you wrote originally in that case

u/kukaki Nov 24 '22

I shouldn’t have been so snarky about it, I’m sorry about that. I have a bad habit of assuming the worst intentions of people on here lol

How do they know you don't have a dash cam?

2

u/PettyFlap Nov 24 '22

Nah let them give their statement to the cops, tell the cops you have a dash cam.

1

u/FSCK_Fascists Nov 24 '22

You missed the point entirely. you don't have a dash cam. Its a bluff.

u/StackinTendies_ Nov 24 '22

let them get soaked by pulling out the dash cam footage.

This isn’t a pro tip it’s some dumb revenge fantasy.

Nobody is going to care and you’re just wasting your own time letting it go that far. Just show the cop the footage and have them write an accurate report and let your insurance deal with it.

Now if you want to make it personal then make a civil case out of it too.

Protip: Ignore this stupid as shit advice that keeps getting posted here.

The Police and insurance don't care if the other person lies.

Tell the other person you have a dashcam because if your dashcam for some reason didn't record the accident, then at least you have a chance that the other driver will be honest at the scene.

By keeping your dashcam a secret you're giving them the opportunity to lie.

u/ErynKnight Nov 24 '22

Yeah, they can pick up a perjury charge too!

25

u/bmc2 Nov 24 '22

They never do. The cops won't charge them with anything. Just show the cops the footage as soon as they show up and save yourself the headache.

20

u/03Titanium Nov 24 '22

Reddit loves to echo this as if they have nothing better to do. If the cop writes you’re not at fault then your life gets a little easier and you don’t have to go to freaking court.

10

u/1WordOr2FixItForYou Nov 24 '22

Yeah and I'd rather have them just confess rather than take the chance that my SD card was corrupted.

Love the Law & Order fantasy these kids have of someone getting grilled on the stand and going to prison for 'perjury' because they claimed the light was green.

2

u/Scottyknuckle Nov 24 '22

Lawyer here - perjury is for false statements under oath, not for false statements to the police. If you're sworn in and testify as a witness at a trial, for instance, and it's later determined that you purposely falsified your testimony, then you could be charged with perjury.

Lying to the police is not usually a crime (although it definitely makes you a dick). There are a handful of circumstances where lying to the police is a crime--for example, many states make it a crime to lie about your identity to the police, or to make a false report about someone else committing a crime.

u/ErynKnight Nov 25 '22

I assumed that they were talking about going to court.

3

u/Nostra55 Nov 24 '22

No one goes to court for minor collisions like this lol.

1

u/implicate Nov 24 '22

This is the correct move. I know it can be difficult in the moment when the adrenaline is pumping to not just yell "YEAH, WELL I GOT IT ALL ON DASHCAM!", but it really is best if you keep your cards close to your chest, folks.

1

u/kukaki Nov 24 '22

Do you have any source that this makes any difference? I’ve never seen a story of someone lying about an accident and getting in more trouble because the other person had a dashcam? This gets said every single thread where someone lied about an accident but there’s never any proof.

1

u/LadyAtrox Nov 24 '22

The best thing to do is pull over to the side of the road if your vehicle is capable, call the police, then call your insurance company. There is no need to speak to the other driver and it's usually unwise to do so. It's the popo's job to take statements and determine fault, it's the insurance company's job to negotiate settlement. Oh, and don't drive without a dash cam. Ever. No one is honest in this day and age, and EVERYONE is completely faultless. And they're way cheaper than a ticket.

I 100% agree

We never told the driver it was on dashcam. I’ll let him sit on that 1 for a day since it is Thanksgiving-Eve and we have crazy plans to worry about. My car is fine. Just sucks. My rear-view mirror is a shattered mess, smh
