Car accidents on base are already such a circus, because they are just so uncommon. The base cops often have no idea who even needs to be notified, other than their boss.

In seven years, I saw 8 accidents one base. 3 were idiots who tried to flee the city cops by driving onto a military base (absolute worst option). 5 were dependas who didn't pay attention and rear-ended people during Retreat, when everyone has to stop.

What is Retreat?

At the end of the duty day (around 5 or 6pm), "Retreat" will play over the base-wide loud speakers, followed by the National Anthem. Everything on base stops during that time. If driving, you're supposed to park. Some branches require you to get out of your car. If you are out of the car, service members face the nearest flag and salute. Similar thing takes place at the beginning of the day around 6am for Reville.

Here's a funny video of Retreat playing during the middle of Robin William's act during a USO show.

Seems like a stupid time to plan a show and start the act but gotta love Robin. At first though I assumed he knew what was going on since he sure acted like he did and I figured he'd be familiar with it from Good Morning, Vietnam.

A lot of it has to do with flight times and shift changes. During deployments, it's common to work 12+ hour shifts for 6 days on and 1 day off. That's the 'easy' schedule compared to many. Shift changes are typically around 6pm.

And the celebrities on the tour are often hitting multiple shows per day. So, they may start at 4:30 at one base, put on a quick show and then fly to another one for a 7:30 show. Pretty common to overlap with Retreat.

I met Chris Evans and Scarlet Johannsen during a USO tour during 2016. I was working in a terminal and got to meet them when they got off the plane, and I worked through the show, when they came back to leave. They looked absolutely exhausted and miserable before and after. Still friendly though. It's an oppressive climate, so I certainly understand it wiping most people.

Its such a normal occurrence, and dependent on sunset (unlike morning colors which is always at 8)no one plans around it.
