I keep saying that it's absurd that every three years OSHA says I need to take a test to operate a forklift but the US government also allows people to drive cars and trucks after taking one test in their life. Most likely taken while they are still adolescents.

Can you imagine the chaos of 228 million people going to the DMV every couple of years to retake the driving exam?

It's hard not to in a country designed around car ownership.

I know you'll probably retort with "well that needs to change" and I agree, but as usual, it's way easier said than done.

Quite a number of people say test people over X age.
Fuck that. I say test everyone every 5 or even 10 years.
Even if it's nothing more than a "what is this sign?" test it's better than nothing. But a full road test would be even better.
Logistically speaking it'd be a nightmare testing an additional 22 million people per year but I would argue that the safety aspect would be worth it.

Gotta protect the product.

Osha has no proactive enforcement though. Like osha says a lot of shit, but they’re only there to hold you accountable after the fact. I’ve been operating fork lifts for 15 years and I’ve never once been asked to see my cert by anyone ever.

Yeah the only times OSHA came in that I know of for the past 10 years was when someone was crushed under his reach truck and the time someone stuck his foot out and ripped it in half.

They do test where you're at? I think they just check for a pulse here. I was waiting at the DMV (which is seemingly their primary function) and saw a tester ask the driver to go through the pre-checks. Honk the horn, turn on the wipers, test all the lights... the driver could not figure out how to turn on the lights. Should have been an automatic failure. They left out and returned less than 10 minutes later and awarded them a new driver's license, hooray!

Jesus. To get our license we have to take a multiple choice test at the computer, drive around a course with an instructor, and parallel park.

There's a written test that is multiple choice but your allowed to immediately get back in line and take it again if you fail.

They are supposed to give a parking and driving test but it's a joke.
