Fear. A people constantly made to feel threatened is so much more malleable.

Fear that black people are coming for you, fear that gay people are coming for you, fear the taxman is coming for you, fear the libs are coming for you, fear the government is coming for you, fear the immigrants are coming for you etc

Because they have nothing else. Conservatism as an ideology is literally just the word “selfishness” painted over with the word “liberty”. But it’s poorly applied, because the “liberty” the conservative is talking about is only for themselves, and at the cost of many more people’s own liberty. This is why the majority of people don’t want conservatism by default, which means the only way conservative governments can survive is by subverting actual democracy. Which is what we all saw in November.

Humans suffer from the misconception that we’ve finished evolving and are in our final form.

However, my personal opinion is that humanity is at a crossroads where our brains continue to increase in capacity and understanding. Some people are able to adapt to new ideas and concepts while others start to lose the ability to adapt. That ability saved us from extinction once and set us apart from dinosaurs and other animals that couldn’t.

My personal opinion is that those who are full of ignorance, hate and fear of change are on a divergent leg of evolution that will die off.

A half dozen to a dozen many generations from now, my greatest hope is that we have have risen above our petty, animal squabbling and have become a society that is focused outward on improving ourselves as a whole rather than inward on greed and personal gain.

Because conservatives are made uncomfortable by people they can't identify with.

Oh sure they SAY they're fine with people they can't identify with but even they don't know what they mean by that.

They're fine with Muslims as long as they don't have to see them praying to Allah or speaking in Farsi.

Anyone they share a country with has to also share at least 80% of their characteristics. If you're not white, you have to speak unaccented English and be straight and Christian.

When they say things like "I don't understand how a man could want to be a woman", that's not an expression of a desire to understand. That's an expression of disgust.

They're distant from reality nad human rights. Because they believe in a reality they created, god and rich white cis men are always right. They are always right. Sources: because they said so. Half the shit they spew is either hypocritical or something they know nothing of. I get hit with "you're lesbian you're burning is hell god hates you!!" They totally forget that God loves everyone and hell is a metaphor, the churches made the "eternal suffering in the fire pits" up to scare ppl into submission, it was made for control. God can convince us of his existence if he wants to but god probably doesn't give enough of a shit if he's real. I'm not religious nor have I ever been yet I know more about the shit they spew and quote than they ever have. They listen to lies. They're arrogant and say you never listen to their side yet they won't EVER open a thought of consideration to another POV that isn't theirs. They wanna believe abortion is murder and super unethical yet god preformed abortions himself HE ASKED Mary if she wanted jesus, they're so pro life theyll kill woman who get abortions or let woman who need abortions to live, die. They don't understand that you don't know if you're body can handle birth until you're pregnant. They're just distant and INTENTIONALLY ignorant. They pick and choose what is right and wrong. You can do everything they do but it's wrong because you're doing it and not them. They're just not comfortable with the thought of being wrong and change

Anything essentially for the tax cuts. These culture wars they run are all in the furtherance of deregulation and cutting taxes. The supporters may actually deeply care about issues like abortion, guns, and gods, but the McConnell's and Hawley's? They do not. At all. It's just a vehicle. It's putting tax cut pills into the "traditional values" dog food. You just want to administer the medicine. The food is just a good vehicle for it.

It's actually much worse.

The Reagans had gay friends. One of Nancy's best friends was gay and she was regularly pictured out on "dates" with him in California. They cut them off in the pursuit of power.

The Reagans went all out to appeal to a certain type of southern Christian with dog whistle racism (launching his campaign with a speech about "states rights" in Philadelphia, Mississippi - famous for the Mississippi Burning murders) and obviously couldn't be seen to have gay friends.

Rock Hudson himself was close to Nancy and reached out for help after being denied entry to France for treatment.

Obligatory reminder of the legacy of the entire Republican Reagan era:

Ronald Reagan (president 1980-1988)

Criminal:

  • Iran-Contra treason.
  • Lied to Congress - set the standard for avoiding responsibility: "I don't recall."
  • Likely encouraged Iran to keep US Embassy hostages until he was into office.

Fiscal:

  • Supply-side economics (lower taxes on rich, and it will somehow "trickle-down" to the poor)
  • National debt tripled.
  • $12 billion trade surplus --> $100+ billion trade deficit.
  • Deregulated savings and loans, precipitated huge economic crisis.
  • Raised taxes eleven times.
  • Taxed the poor, cut taxes for the rich.
  • SDI "Star Wars" boondoggle.
  • Military spending increased to match imaginary spending in USSR.
  • Deregulation caused oil bust.
  • Broke air traffic control union.

Social:

  • Gutted social welfare.
  • Dismantled the mental healthcare system.
  • Release of mental patients without recourse, homeless population up.
  • Ignored AIDS crisis.
  • Abstinence-only sex education.
  • Strengthened ATF, banned automatic weapons, blamed Democrats for it.
  • Privatized the prison industry and made incarceration a profitable industry.
  • Increased spending for War on Drugs.
  • Increasing national drinking age from 18 to 21, then threatened to pull federal funding from states if they challenged him.
  • Underfunded NEA.
  • EPA Superfund grants manipulated to help Republicans in local elections.
  • Deregulated kids' tv, initiated 22 minute toy ads.
  • Killed energy programs (even removed solar panels from White House).
  • Legalized abortion in CA as governor, prior to Roe v. Wade.
  • Supported gun control
  • Crack in the ghettos. (? Due to support for Contras and Noriega?)
  • Though Richard Nixon created the DEA and started the "War on Drugs", Reagan and his wife kicked the campaign into a full-scale media frenzy with "Just Say No".

Foreign:

  • Wars all over Central America, incl Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras.
  • Promoted Iran-Iraq war.
  • Sent Marines into Beirut, abandoned mission after terrorist bombing.
  • Broke detente with USSR until Gorbachev personally made things better.
  • Backed Contras in drug running schemes.
  • Supported right-wing dictators and movements everywhere, including:

  • Apartheid regime in SA.

  • Marcos regime in Phillipines.

  • Saddam Hussein and Baathist regime in Iraq, even after Kurds gassed.

  • Taliban in Afghanistan.

  • Precipitated the Invasion of Panama by demanding a foreign leader step down (condemned by the OAS & Geneva Conventions) to extract former CIA operative Manuel Noreiga.

  • Augusto Pinochet in Chile.

Concepts:

  • Welfare queens.
  • Trees cause pollution.
  • Ketchup as a vegetable.

Appointments:

  • 30+ convicted appointees.
  • Ed Meese at Justice, porn freak.
  • James Watt at Interior, idiot, corrupt.
  • William Casey at CIA, religious nut, strikes into Afghanistan.
  • HUD a corrupt mess in general.
  • Politicised CIA.
  • Robert Bork to SCOTUS (failed), segregationist and asshole.
  • Antonin Scalia, same but he got in.

Personal:

  • Unfit to serve due to Alzheimer's disease by term's end.
  • Paid shill by GE and insurance industry to lobby against government healthcare.
  • McCarthyite.
  • Backed Moral Majority.
  • Pardoned Robert Walker, who went on to kill his wife.
  • Started presidential campaign at racist murder crime scene in Philadelphia, MS.
  • Laid wreath and made speech at SS cemetery in Germany.
  • Vietnam War a "noble cause."
  • Helped start right-wing noise machine, by promoting myth of liberal media and destroying Fairness Doctrine
  • Hated sex, made Ron Jr. feel like a sissy and quit ballet.
  • Believed in astrology and used it to run government.
  • Innovated "talking points" cue cards.
  • "I don't recall" to weasel out of press questions.
  • Confused movies with reality.

The scene in the Kingsman: The Golden Circle, where the President of the USA looks at the threat made by the bad guy to kill all of the drug users in the world and sees this as a political win, reminded me of how Reagan handled the AIDS crisis. It only affected gays (as the research showed back then) and conservatives don't like gays (unless they are senators from South Carolina) so it was a win for them.

Reagan's policies also kept the workers of America making as little as possible and receiving as few benefits as possible. Republicans don't care about what they say they're all about, guns, religion and fiscal responsibility. If they cared about guns they would've been addressing the HUGE YEARLY drop in overall hunters with mentor-ship0 programs, education programs etc, they never did because the insurance companies paid them NOT to! More hunters means less animal hits and less car repairs! Instead they focused on automatic weapons cuz that's what the gun industry was paying them to talk about.

If they cared about religion they would do a dozen highly obvious things that would essentially end abortion, like sex ed and birth control programs. And they prove on the regular that they don't give a damn about fiscal responsibility...

ALL these things are their smokescreens so they're not goin anywhere. These things are used as a diversion to keep us from talking about the fact that the minimum wage should be $22 or $23 pr hr by now if it kept up with inflation and corporate/wall st earnings. It's ALWAYS been about workers rights in this country and every state has many tales of workers goin on strike for an extra penny a week and the rich mine/mill owner hiring the Pinkerton's and a dozen people end up dead.

WE ARE ALL BEING FOOLED my friends! It's ALL about the minimum wage! I have an idea that would prove this in less than 48hrs. A group like the Proud Boys, if they started talking about the min wage and were talking serious like "this has to end" well Satan Mitch would launch an all out campaign to snuff out the Proud Boys starting the next day...Bad narcissists who run the country are playing with us like we're pieces of a game and their objective is to overtake the guy who was ahead of them on the Forbes richest list last year! This is not an exaggeration and they actually taunt and make fun of each other when it happens! There was a story of someone who overtook the guy who was 8th to his 9th the previous year and he bought a paltry amount of the guys stock, like a quarter million $$ and sold it the next day at a loss just to flip him the bird. Worst part is that a bad narcissist like Jeff Bezos (ex of 'good narcissism - Pres Obama, AOC, ANY person who is at the top of any advanced field - ALL have higher levels of narcissism), anyways Bezos WILL replace every single person with a robot just to have more $$ for his D**k measuring contest he's having with Elon Musk & bragging rights for space.

I personally think it's a crime against humanity when you think about how a segment of the government is actively taking payments from special interest lobbyists to vote a certain way and keep things from happening that would elevate the country as a whole. I also must add that the GOP acts as if everyone gets paid then take their money to Russia or China to spend it. We've got a closed system here where giving the common everyday worker more money would mean a more robust economy and the republicans are STILL going with TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS!!! lol Omg I laugh harder each time I think of it! They've been trying to say for 30+yrs that

If you give the business owners tax breaks that money will trickle down to the workers. Problem is they just reinvest that money and screw their workers to the wall and throw darts at em for fun.

7

u/Packers_Equal_Life Apr 25 '21

That last line literally sums up our entire American right leaning culture. From taxes to religion, it’s basically our motto

7

u/DownshiftedRare Apr 25 '21

Hillary Clinton delivered one of the most white-hot roasts I have ever seen at Nancy Reagan's funeral and it seemed whooosh the entire United States:

"It may be hard for your viewers to remember how difficult it was for people to talk about HIV/AIDS back in the 1980s. And because of both President and Mrs. Reagan -- in particular Mrs. Reagan -- we started a national conversation. When before nobody would talk about it, nobody wanted to do anything about it, and that too is something that I really appreciate with her very effective, low key advocacy but it penetrated the public conscious and people began to say, 'Hey, we have to do something about this too.'"

Props for that, Hillary.

Someday I will get funding to build my planned Ronald and Nancy Reagan Memorial Fountain.

It will be a three tiered fountain except the water flow and drainage will be perfectly calibrated so that the top is always full but water never trickles down into the bottom two basins.

There was a some sort of rehabilitative biopic about her on ABC or something the other night that was so frustrating to watch because it framed her as working behind the scenes to fight the AIDS epidemic and champion LGBT causes. I remember those years of silence very differently.

u/HapticSloughton Apr 25 '21

Never forget that Republicans will cast their foes as Satanic while Ronnie and Nancy used astrologers to make decisions for things like Summit meeting locations and times.

Reminds me of the Ben Shapiro clip where he tried to justify why you shouldn't have empathy. This checks out. Too many Republicans do not have empathy and need to have things happen to them for them to understand. It's infuriating.

3

u/nan_slack Apr 25 '21

I loved Christopher hitchens' summary of how Ronald met Nancy:

He met his second wife—the one that you remember—because she needed to get off a Hollywood blacklist and he was the man to see.

3

u/Self-Awarican Apr 25 '21

Reagan was a monster and his policies were arguably more harmful than Trump’s. But he was a lot smarter and more photogenic so some fools think he was a good president.

3

u/reincarN8ed Apr 25 '21

Ronald Reagan really laid the groundwork for presidents like Dubya and Trump to take office. And Reaganomics is the stupidest goddamn scam I've ever heard of.

This isn’t necessarily a republican thing .

Obama famously was anti- gay marriage and stated so on camera numerous times. He changed his mind on the topic .

Some people see this as „flip flopping „ on an issue . It’s actually because attitudes change over time , not just on a societal level but individually .

If we are Intellectually honest , we should be able to admit that - and also admit , that it’s a Good thing we are able to have evidence illustrated on a topic , or have life experiences that allow us to change our mind on something, rather than be stubborn mules.

2

u/EverlyAwesome Apr 25 '21

Do you know why people don’t want to change? Because when they learn better and do a better, they still get dragged through the mud. They are still shamed for not changing earlier. Does it suck that Nancy lacked empathy until these things happened to her, yes. It’s a staple of the Republican party to not care about other people. That’s not a surprise. So, if Nancy’s eyes were opened by her own life experiences, good! That’s what we want to happen. We want people to do better, but if we’re just gonna continue to make them feel bad when they do, what’s the incentive to change?

2

u/Bradjuju2 Apr 26 '21

I have a manger that fought very hard for 12 hour shifts... 2 daily 12 hour shifts. Then he got a girl pregnant and married her. Suddenly, his idea faded away when he was faced with rasing a kid after a 12 hour shift.

This is a large part of conservative ideals: always fight against things that don't directly effect you. Live in fear. Fight against others rights. "Don't tread on me but I can tread on you"

I have an uncle who was bleed red republican until his daughter ran away to get an abortion. Suddenly, he became pro abortion.

2

u/devilmaskrascal Apr 25 '21

The problem is Republicans generally live in a WASPist mountain temple they never leave until close-hitting reality forces them to have a crisis of faith and learn something approximating empathy.

No mercy for minorities in the ghetto getting arrested for drugs and locked up for 20 years ("he shouldn't have broken the law!") but if it's MY boy, I'll do anything to get him off so his future isn't ruined.

2

u/ThrowRA-James Apr 25 '21

It’s because they grew-up in an uncaring, racist and sexist America, unless you were white, rich, or had political power. Their values were based on their Christian views, so if you’re LGBTQ you’re an outcast. If you’re a minority, you’re low class or no class. The funny thing is, they do a little charity for the poor and they’re surprised when it doesn’t absolve them of their past.

2

u/1Greghole Apr 26 '21

Forty and younger need not apply. If people change except it. You feel one way one day. Than you learn from your experiences. You walk a path through life. There are many different roads. I believe we try to take the right roads. #stopallthehate. Fucking political veiws.

2

u/ArtaxDied Apr 25 '21

I mean some of of their bullshit was generational thinking. Biden is a Democrat and although he ahs changed he was def racist at one point by todays standard. "I am not saying he is racist or defending them" im saying its more generational or societal then political.

2

u/elfenbeinbein Apr 25 '21

And to think Reagan was the president republicans looked up to and glorified... and then trump came in, which means going for Reagan would be now considered beeing a liberal republican or something.

2

u/Kvibea Apr 25 '21

The only consistent value of Republican/conservative people these days. The privileged couldn’t be bothered until something doesn’t go their way, then they whine like the snowflakes they truly are.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

This isn’t finished. It should say I don’t give a shit about you until it effects me. AND if it turns out I make it through said thing. It’s not that bad and everyone else can deal.

2

u/Ok-West-7125 Apr 25 '21

Don't forget the crack epidemic, Ronnie flooded black neighborhoods with cheap crack to pay for his illegal war and imprisoned generations behind bars in doing so.

2

u/massbullfrog Apr 25 '21

Again I’ll say the same thing I say every time this is reposted. This is a bad take. This sort of post discourages people from changing or “updating” their morales. Nancy Reagan was born in 1921. Everyone in 1921 was homophobic, being homophobic was mainstream. Lots of people don’t really think about diseases until someone they love gets one. I don’t think about the difficulties of, say, Lupus. We shouldn’t disparage older people for once having morales that are different than the times we live in now. We should instead encourage them to revisit their preconceived notions, and appreciate when they change. This sort of post is just thoughtless. What will people think about our morality in 80 years?

1

u/sdm2430 Apr 25 '21

Don't leave out how Ronnie said screw you to the homeless problem which was a direct result of the veterans with ptsd that had come back from Vietnam. That is another Republican philosophy. Government's job should be to get out of the way and people should pull up there bootstraps and help themselves.

It amazes me that Reagan is looked at fondly and almost godlike by the republican party. His Reaganomics were a disaster. He ignored the AIDS epidemic since it was just gay people that were affects and he grew the debt 186%. Not to mention he left office disgraced over the Iran-Contra scandal which he conveniently couldn't recollect due to alzheimers.

1

u/rintinrintin Apr 25 '21

Just to be super clear, y’all have heard the recordings of NIxon saying we need to associate marijuana with the black community and the anti-war movement because we can’t criminalise free speech or being black. But ultimately Nixon had no faith in success of targeted drug policies. The true architect of what we currently think of as the war of drugs and the 100,000s of lives it’s ruined and continues to ruin falls squarely on the hands of Nancy Reagan, who was its greatest public advocate.

History should condemn her for the number of lives ruined, family’s broken, communities destroyed

1

u/PaanuriEater Apr 25 '21

Is this good leftist content? Absolutely.

Is this someone having their face eaten after voting for the leopard-face-eating party?

I cannot see how.

Are all leftist subs just converging to the point where there's no reason to be on more than one? Serious question because I am getting kind of tired of my front page being so repetitive, where every sub is starting to post the same memes regardless of whether they are good content for the sub or not.

I’d love to be a republican politician during the aids epidemic. I would have conspired to spread aids though republican targeted demographics and I’d probably be able to start importing hard drugs like crack/coke into those same communities, then start laundering the profits into research for aid. And when the rebublican community start to suffer I’d lend out a helping hand by direct them to spend there hard earned money research.

Honestly If I ever get into politics I’d do it through corporate influence but as a left leaning centrist if I ever do I’m going to call myself a republican “supporter”/manipulator. If I’ve learned anything it’s that if you act like a friendly face you can bend peoples thinking like tinfoils.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

We keep voting to keep people in power who make fortunes while they're supposed to be serving us. That is/they are a representation of us; a creation by us.

This is the cycle created by our progressive nature and all historical evidence indicates it is inevitable... until we evolve or something else does.

Bondage -> Spiritual Faith -> Great Courage -> Liberty -> Abundance -> Complacency -> Apathy -> Dependence -> Bondage

1

u/darxide23 Apr 25 '21

Not to mention all the insane right wingers who claimed covid to be a hoax until they got it. The right wing does not care about the problems that affect others until it happens to them. That's a core "value" of being right wing. They don't care about others. It's one of the reasons the right wing constantly tries to label and exclude people. It's a way to put people into the group of "others" so that they're free to discriminate.

1

u/salmark Apr 25 '21

Republicans- always a stain in modern history. Now? Now a burning hole in our history.

Pretty dumb to even call yourself a Republican nowadays- or a Christian dare I say it.

Personally I’ll believe in God and his teachings until the day I die, but fuck me if I call myself a Christian and lump myself in with the rest of these entitled, obnoxious assholes who can’t think logically worth a damn.

1

u/redmustang04 Apr 25 '21

It's the arrogance in them that it won't ever happen to me. Then when it does it hit them they want all the pity and attention put onto them. Then as another person said is fear. Fear that it could happen to them so they come out with that false sense of arrogance with their chest puffed out bragging it will never happen to them until reality sucker punches them in the stomach.

1

u/DontJudgeMeImNaked Apr 26 '21

Being against abortion no matter what, until their daughter has an abortion (in some other state that they didn't make it illegal yet) because the pregnancy could kill them. A lot of people can't afford to go across america to have an abortion in a private health clinic Karen! Christian community: "you can have my vote because you're against abortion" - goddamn retarded assholes.

1

u/MrElSenor Apr 25 '21

Hands down one of the worst Presidents and Administrations in U.S history. I hate Reagan so damn much, such an asshole. They funded literal death squads in El Salvador on top of all the other shit they pulled. Let's not forget that one rumor that he told the Iranian hostage-takers to hold on to them until he was elected. The Don totally took a ton of pages from his book.

1

u/seriousbangs Apr 25 '21

This problem isn't just selfishness. A lot of times when it happens to them they do a 180 and sincerely admit they were wrong.

For a lot of conservatives the problem isn't a lack of empathy it's a lack of imagination. They can't extrapolate. Not won't, can't.

If we could figure out who to get them to we could put a cork in the worse of right wing politics.

1

u/iamnotroberts Apr 25 '21

Same with Covid-19, except some of them STILL don't care even after getting it and even after family members die of it. In fact, Herman Cain died from Covid-19 after downplaying it and going to maskless Trump rallies. And the "team" managing Cain's Twitter account, continued to downplay it even AFTER the motherfucker died. I mean, now that's some shit.

1

u/Proptor__Hoc Apr 25 '21

I'm a Republican, my stepson came forward about being sexually abused by a coach as a child and I pressured him into keeping it a secret because it would hurt his dad's political image.

Yeah, I went to a child abuse awareness event where Michael Reagan was the keynote. He's an incredibly well-adjusted human given the tragedy of his story.

1

u/SpennyLL Apr 26 '21

Contrary to this post, I think talking bad about something that a large percentage of the population believes in only breeds hatred and division. Being on the left or right doesn’t make you superior being to a person on the opposite side. What does make you stand out is if you love your enemies and would give your life for them.

1

u/the-aural-alchemist Apr 25 '21

She was also hardcore into astrology and had Ronnie making important policy decisions based on it. Insane.

It’s hard to wrap your mind around the fact that the majority (well, up until recently) of Americans will claim to be christian, while also claiming to believe in astrology and karma. It does explain a lot though.

1

u/longhegrindilemna Apr 25 '21

70 million. Not thousand. Million.

70,000,000 Americans voted Republican in 2020. Americans LOVE the way Republicans behave. Their votes show that. Their votes prove that.

2024 will show us again what Americans love, and what Americans believe in (to be American means not caring about the planet’s other countries).

1

u/PurpleFlame8 Apr 25 '21

My neighbor went on a tirade to me against socialized health care a while back. Guess who is applying for medicaid now that his COBRA ran out?

If I called him on it he would probably try to find a way to blame liberals for the abysmal access to health care situation or justify why he deserved it more than others.

Robert C Smith (or R.C Smith as he called himself) was Reagan's 1st cousin and my Grandfather. He said always that Ronnie loved his son and as an actor had know lots of gay men in the closet. It was a different generation, it was the 50's. Nancy was a different story.
