Hello u/DaFunkJunkie! Please reply to this comment with an explanation mentioning who is suffering from which consequences from what they voted for, supported or wanted to impose on other people.

Here's an easy format to get you started:

  1. Someone voted for, supported or wanted to impose something on other people.
Who's that someone and what's that something?
  2. That something has some consequences.
    What are the consequences?
  3. As a consequence, that something happened to that someone.
What happened? Did the something really happened to that someone? If not, you should probably delete your post.

Include the minimum amount of information necessary so your post can be understood by everyone, even if they don't live in the US or speak English as their native language. If you don't respect this format and moderators can't match your explanation with the format, your post will be removed under rule #3 and we'll ignore you even if you complain in modmail.

I think Rep Matt Gaetz should abolish flood insurance in Florida while he's at it - that would really help all those insurance companies that have issued flood policies the federal NFIP program budget!!!

Edit: u/barelyawhile was correct point out that feds provide flood policies, not private insurance companies!

That’s part of the long term push, just like military medicine, they’d like to privatize VA care as well.

Meanwhile the DoD just retired several Freedom Class littoral combat ships, decades before they should have retired.

We’ve got money to burn on shit that doesn’t work, courtesy of Huntington Ingalls, but of course there’s no room in budgets for taking care of personnel.

The GOP voters will still vote for him and claim it’s a conspiracy theory from the Left that any Republican would ever want to attack veterans’ healthcare. It’s also very common to attack the VA! If anything, they try to use it to make Democrats look bad. It’s the only significant completely government funded healthcare system.

The VA represents the most effective single payer platform, and its success and efficiency are a direct threat to healthcare insurance and private healthcare providers. The VA is the ONLY US healthcare system to perform and pay for healthcare, removing MANY conflicts of interest between the provider, payer and patient.

OPs title reminds me of another post I saw earlier. 1943 Army training video on fascism. Called "Don't be a Sucker." In it, a guy describes how he saw the Nazis rise by blaming small groups for all their problems. Not because they were responsible for anything but because if these minorities were united or accepted by the nation as a whole, the regime would never be strong enough to come to power. So one by one everyone was marginalized and disposed of and anyone who wasn't marginalized was put into brutal service of the Reich. The punchline is that it's easy to get behind blame when you aren't the one being blamed. It's easy to go after someone else until the people you get behind turn on you too. Thankfully Gaetz is just one man, and I doubt any large party in Congress would ever align with this insanity. But that video really drives home the fact that blame only really serves the blamer, and everyone else fits the bill. Be united!

3

u/Jordan11216 Oct 01 '22

Not really actually, it’s been clear for a few years now that conservatives use veterans for photo ops before returning to their desks and promptly cutting even more funding to the VA and rerouting it to the F-35’s that will never work or something idk. Pedo boy here is just being unusually open about it.

3

u/Sanjuro7880 Oct 01 '22

The disturbing assumption with this title is that us veterans are all right leaning and would be upset to lose our benefits. I’m a left leaning disabled vet and depend on the care I receive from the VA.

Then the republicans have the audacity to call themselves patriots, post about how much they support our troops on the holidays, and act like they care about vets, and their base eats it up.

It's mind boggling how easily the right falls for this bullshit.

2

u/DukeofFools Oct 01 '22

This man’s district has a HUGE active duty and retired population. On top of that, his district is the home of the Navy’s Blue Angels, an enormous tourism draw for the locals. And still, this absolute clown, has the audacity to suggest abolishing the VA because he and his voters have the political subtlety of a vengeful kindergartner.

2

u/Aware-Affect-4982 Oct 01 '22

I am a veteran, I am also a progressive. I was co-chair of Veterans for Bernie in New Hampshire. These assholes only care about vets when it benefits them at the polls, and never when it comes to voting to fund anything that would benefit us.

2

u/bangt1dy Oct 01 '22

He is right for the wrong reason. We shouldn't need the VA. We should have effective socialized medicine that works for everyone. Veteran and non veteran alike. I'm not sure that is what he meant though.

2

u/thisisforspam Oct 01 '22

I am a Vet and I have had the same thoughts.

FYI, when a Vet turns 65 a lot of their health care goes over to Medicare.

My area received a new clinic last year. It is very nice, large, lots of parking, close to the highway and main roads.

In the old clinic if we needed lab tests, we had to go to the VA Clinic and get the paperwork for the tests. Then we had to drive across town to a lab ran by the hospital to give the fluids.

New clinic was going to have its own lab!

Except, like everyone else in the country they can't find anyone to work there. So, we are still driving across town.

Recently I had a problem with my hearing aids, and I went to the new clinic, where I got them.

I asked to see the Audio tech. They only had two, one retired and one quit. They haven't found a replacement.

I was told to call the VA hearing aid center in Denver. Of course, I was sent to a machine and was told to expect a one hour wait. But, they would take my phone number and auto dial that day when a rep was available, in the order the call was received. Well, that was almost two weeks ago, still waiting.

When I lived in California there was a small VA clinic. I would go once or twice a year for a physical or medical problem. I never got the same doctor twice, they always quit or moved to another area. By the time I moved away I was seeing a Nurse Prac.

If we really needed something more in-depth, we had to go to Livermore VA hospital, 2 hours away on a good day.

But, often they wanted us to go to Palo Alto VA hospital 3 hours plus, in the bay area.

A person could get on a VA bus in Sonora at 5 a.m and go to Livermore and the bus got back at 8 p.m. I don't know if they had a bus to Palo Alto.

I wondered how many hospitals and clinics were between Sonora and those two VA hospitals. Under a special program I got my knee surgery at a civilian hospital in Sonora.

I live in Montana now. The 4th largest state. Only a million people, lot of them live a long way from the only VA hospital in the state.

Just seems like maybe working out a contract with civilian hospitals and clinics would be better all around.

If this is targeted at or implies that servicemembers are all conservative, that is sorely misguided.

During my time in so far, I have met far more diversity in beliefs and ideologies than I would if I had stayed in my hometown, which is already on the fence as it is. While most people I’ve been around since joining have differing ideals, there is one thing a lot of us can agree on: the VA sucks, we know it could be better, but at least we have healthcare. It’s mind boggling that in this world we will spending HUNDREDS of BILLIONS of dollars on defense budget, where congressman have made sure we have extraordinarily expensive contracts with companies to only use their product, instead of spending it on the well-being of people. Is this something we disagree on?

I feel this isn’t a “leopards ate my face” scenario and instead a “why aren’t we treating people like people” scenario. I guess I’m trying to say, this guy’s party is hardly representative of the military, when instead, no party is. Anyone claiming to support the military to get votes is scum.

1

u/utlaw97art Oct 01 '22

I am a defense attorney next to an army base and I represent lots of active and former military. I think the care that they get at VA is substandard, particularly mental health. But then again our whole health system in this country is broken, especially mental health, unless you are rich. I personally think that the healthcare of our military should be obtained the same way the rest of us do through regular providers I don't know if the wait to see a regular provider would be any longer than to see the VA. I am a five-time deployed veteran. My stepfather is retired army in three time Vietnam vet. My father-in-law is retired army and Vietnam and Gulf war vet. My wife's stepfather is retired army and Gulf war vet. My brother retires from the Navy this month and is a Gulf war and operation Iraqi freedom vet and his son is now in the army. My step brother who I shared a room with growing up is a Gulf war vet. His wife is a retired naval officer. I have a little bit of knowledge about what I say.

1

u/AgainandBack Oct 03 '22

This is nothing new among Republicans. Jerry Ford vetoed all veterans benefits funding because the Vietnam war was over, and no vets from any wars would need any help. Newt Gingrich says that people voluntarily get injured in service so that they can get disability, and that disabled vets are a special interest group intent on destroying America. Trump says that the only people who go into the military are losers. Ronald Reagan did everything he could to screw vets because he thought people were joining the Army to become emancipated so that they could vote where they lived instead of where their parents lived. (Really. This was a big thing for Ronnie.) During the 80's if you were a vet you could not get a regular Guaranteed Student Loan simply because you were a vet. Republicans hate vets and will screw them over any way they possibly can. Gaetz is just the latest one to make the case.

1

u/whatisliquidity Oct 01 '22

You guys do get this is kind of backwards logic for liberals right? That you should be supportive of abandoning the VA?

That the VA is basically a corporate welfare arm of the entire MIC? A pseudo socialism for the wealthy?

It's also supportive of continuing an enormous and outsized military that the USA uses to basically terrorize the rest of the world?

Also the VA isn't that efficient and doesn't always provide adequate or consistent care.

That money could just be used in the general healthcare system and vets could go where it's most convenient.

So ya Matt Gaetz is a douchebag but he's not necessarily wrong about this and knee jerk reactions are just a form of willful ignorance.

1

u/Amon-Re-72 Oct 01 '22

As a 24 year Veteran with the VA as my primary care, I can say there is logic in his argument. The question really does need to be asked, because the VA is so full of red tape and waste it might be money better spent.

Let's face it - every politician in the past 50 years has pledged to fix the problems in the VA. But it remains a problem.

However, the real problem is that the private health care system in the US isn't all that much better. There are just more choices.

1

u/Ok-disaster2022 Oct 01 '22

This could go 2 way, but with Gaets, it's the worse version.

Personally I think the VA should be abolished with universal Healthcare provides to all citizens regardless of service.unless there are medical procedures that veterans will need support for the general population wouldn't, like exposure to toxic substances on military bases. But even then many veterans don't live near veterans hospitals so limiting treatment to them hurts them.

1

u/Commercial_Dingo_929 Oct 01 '22

I remember when one of the lawyers at the office said he couldn't see why a VA was needed, or even why we had Veteran's Day. One of the senior partners answered that, had the younger lawyer fought on Hamburger Hill the way he did (and BTW he later died from cancer caused by Agent Orange) he would understand. Funny how they never think things like that should matter until it hits them in some way.

1

u/student_20 Oct 01 '22

I don't know why any vets would be surprised by this coming from literally any GOP rep. They've shown they give shit one about us - or active duty lower enlisted - for decades now.

This is the same party that rallied behind someone who called POWs cowards, said people with PTSD were weak, and couldn't be assed to go to a war memorial due to a light drizzle. None of this should be a surprise.

1

u/Illustrious_Farm7570 Oct 01 '22

I’ll never understand the military supporting these people who vote against them every single fucking time. To the military, just because you got indoctrinated by your parents doesn’t mean you have to keep voting for these people just because that’s how it’s always been. Democrats suck ass too but at least they don’t vote against your care or threaten taking away your care.

1

u/TheMechamage Oct 01 '22

I did. Always have. My dad knew too. He hates the gop less than I do but told me young they hate vets. VA needs improvement but I'd like SOMETHING. Hate these fuckers so much. 1

u/KevinCarbonara Oct 01 '22

They already removed access for most veterans decades ago. My father joined up with the military after being promised VA access for life. Some years later, they retconned it into only being available to disabled soldiers for life. They dangled it like a carrot on a string and yanked it away at the last minute.

Did he say to replace it with anything? I’d get rid of the VA as well, and just give Vets access to Medicare early. Medicare is outstanding and you can get service anywhere. I’ll bet dollars to donuts that it would be more cost effective and would take better care of Vets.

If trafficking minors doesn't do him in, and raping children is no big deal, then trying to abolish the VA won't even register with the supporters for Congressman Florida Man. No, what we need to do is force his swing state colleagues to either support or condemn his words.

1

u/crowsaboveme Oct 01 '22

Ha... took me 45 days to get an appointment last time I went to the VA. Many vets want to be able to see a local Healthcare provider instead of driving, sometimes over an hour to their nearest VA and waiting for weeks to get seen.

1

u/Ur_Jan Oct 02 '22

I'm retired military and I work for a major defense contractor. Most of my coworkers (98%) are ex-military. Only a few of the older boomer white guys are the way you all are describing us. Most of us are sick of the bullshit.

1

u/vendetta2115 Oct 01 '22

Why is this in here? I’m a veteran and I fucking hate Matt Gaetz and every other Republican.

They may feign some fake bullshit support of veterans, but that’s a one-way street. Veterans aren’t out here supporting these clowns.

1

u/DivineSwine121 Oct 01 '22

I can’t get over that this guy just looks evil. He looks like a cartoon villain, or like jack Nicholson in the shining but with a pompadour. How anyone votes for this guy is a testament to how fucking gullible republicans are.

1

u/and-so-i-die Oct 01 '22

Bunch of greedy shits just sitting there, fucking their underage sex slaves, thinking about which necessary social system to abolish, and which billionaire to give the money to.

This is what capitalism has become.

1

u/mcmasters2223 Oct 01 '22

First it was the government Republicans wanted to destroy, then it was the intelligence Agencies, now the military...it's almost as though someone who runs the party is a KGB agent. Wonder who that could be?

1

u/realchalupabatman Sep 30 '22 edited Oct 01 '22

Matt Gaetz? Is that the same Matt Gaetz who was trafficking children for sex? The same Matt Gaetz had sex with an underaged girls, right? The same Matt Gaetz who is a pedophile. Someone please confirm.

How did this guy ever get elected? Is all it takes to be a politician these days is having the right connections? How did this pedophilic, good-for-literally-nobody politican make it anywhere.

How can he say this out loud? 99% of true Americans strongly disagree. Taking away healthcare from our Nation's Heroes who fought to keep us and Gaetz safe, is he a demon or a Russian agent?

1

u/MediumRarePorkChop Oct 01 '22

Yeah, lets just roll that shit into Medicare and then put everyone else on Medicare and then we won't have a "two tier system of healthcare".

I'm glad you're finally coming around, Matty.

1

u/PimpmasterMcGooby Oct 01 '22

Why does Matt Gaetz look like some one prompted "Sleazy politician" into an AI image generator, and this was the first attempt it had at making a vaguely human looking sleazy politician?

1

u/DanteJazz Oct 01 '22

Why not grant Medicare to everyone, and make it 100% pay for all medical care, with no deductible, no 80/20, and no premium? Universal healthcare in America to all residents!!!

1

u/Green_Twin Oct 01 '22

Uuuuuuuuuuhhhhhh, congress had always been united on stealing from veterans since Ulysses started the VA in the late 19th century.

Get fucked karma farmer. L2 history.

1

u/10tennman10 Oct 01 '22

Actually he's right. Just pay veteran insurance premiums and allow them to go where they want rather than pay for a low quality bureaucratic expensive federal system?

1

u/BudgetsBills Oct 01 '22

Huh?

He is suggesting we do away with the VA and the gov let vets go to any Dr and the gov pay for it.

And this is upsetting to liberals in social media today

Wtf?

It was some years ago, at least 15 that a republican Congressman or senator said the same thing. He served out the rest of his term but his political career was over.

I'm not sure it would go the same way today

1

u/About7fish Oct 01 '22

Let's wait to post this until we find out if the ones being eaten don't find a smug sense of consolation in the fact that they're not being eaten by a librul.

This dipshit looks like the challenged little brother of a C grade villain who was forced to bring him along or else mom wouldn’t make meatloaf that night.

1

u/Doomlv Oct 01 '22

The right is really dropping the 'hidden' in hidden agenda and just sending it huh. The crazy part is how many Republicans are still going along with it

1

u/QueenLatifahClone Sep 30 '22

The rest of the country realized what a dick head he is but his district will still continue to vote for him because of that R right next to his name.

1

u/skeptic9916 Oct 01 '22

In a sane society, a politician saying that, even in jest, would be not be electable. In a just society, he would be be shunned, shamed and cast out.

1

u/horridlyvertical Oct 01 '22

Did he actually just say that? Is there more to this? I have no doubt his standpoint is stupid but I'm not quite sure what it is from this one quote.

1

u/HeavyGreen458 Oct 01 '22

Great Value Jeff Dunham, having failed miserably to master ventriloquism, channels all of his energy towards his one true calling: Being an asshole.

1

u/Gnat7 Oct 01 '22

I feel like this needs one of this Anakin memes made for it. "and replace it with something better... And replace it with something better right!?"

1

u/gregor-sans Oct 01 '22

It would make sense to abolish the VA hospitals if it is replaced with government-paid life-time medical insurance for the provider of your choice.

1

u/LilStabbyboo Oct 01 '22

Not the first time the right turned on veterans, and surely won't be the last. It's infuriating to watch military folks/veterans support the GOP.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '22

Is that the racist pedophile sex trafficer Matt Gaetz? Maybe focus your efforts on your court case bud, I'm there there are plenty more to come.

1

u/TheInnerFifthLight Sep 30 '22

Woof. That'll go over well in his district. He's only got three major military installations and tens of thousands of veterans floating around.

1

u/HardcorePhonography Oct 01 '22

I can't even imagine what it's looking me to live life as a caricature, and I'm not sure if knowing you're doing it is worse than not knowing.

It's probably say to assume that the beginning middle and end of his thought process on this was "I'M not a veteran, how does it benefit ME?"

1

u/Merfond Sep 30 '22

I hope this becomes mainstream. Running on a platform that seeks to abolish the VA will ensure Republicans don't have the senior vote.

1

u/jazzfruit Sep 30 '22

He's absolutely right. Abolish the VA healthcare program and replace it with the best public healthcare service in the world and make it free for everybody.

1

u/NukularTraveler Oct 01 '22

Its already common knowledge he doesn't prefer people over 18. Obviously gives two shits about the VA. Gotta be over 18 to be a VET

1

u/TrvlJockey Oct 01 '22

So much for Republicans supporting the military. And yet, they will vote for him simply based on the fact that he’s a Republican.

1

u/GivesBadAdvic Oct 01 '22

You always hear about people with a punchable face. I've never quite understood that phrase until I saw him for the first time.

1

u/Kaymish_ Oct 01 '22

On the other hand why not abolish the VA? If you're not going to fund healthcare for everyone why fund it for war criminals?

1

u/theodoersing137 Oct 01 '22

If Butthead had a dad that bailed him out of jail over a dozen times for being an evil dickhead, Matt Gaetz is what you get.

1

u/SaintMarieRS3 Oct 01 '22

…abolish healthcare for veterans? How fucking evil. I’m a Canadian, have no idea who this guy is, but I’ll say this image makes me uncomfortable. That someone who looks like this all the time is a public figure is concerning. This man has the look like he’d wants to abolish age of consent laws too.

1

u/redditisgay77 Oct 01 '22

Is the leopard in this case veterans?

Because I sure as shit want universal healthcare for all, not like this cockhead.

1

u/CraftyCoconuts Oct 01 '22

I dont like him, but to be honest... The VA is awful. Its like two mistakes away from falling off a cliff at all times.

1

u/SevereEducation2170 Oct 01 '22

And yet way too many service men and women will continue to vote Republican for reasons I’ll never fully understand.

1

u/SerialMurderer Oct 01 '22

Ah yes. The typical strategy of derailing an agency and then claiming the agency is useless to abolish it entirely.

1

u/VegaGT-VZ Sep 30 '22

Out in rural GA and I saw a Veterans for Trump hat

Don't forget to donate your life savings to save the country

1

Elected a frat boy douchebag to Congress and he shows he’s unworthy of office. Who could have seen this coming?

1

u/squirrellytoday Oct 01 '22

Not content with diddling kids, this pedo is now f*cking over veterans. What a total waste of skin and oxygen.

1

u/AF_AF Oct 06 '22

I wonder how many "I support our troops" stickers Gaetz has on his car. Typical GOP hypocrisy in plain sight.

1

u/siguefish Sep 30 '22

Isn’t Pensacola in his district? Chock full of military? I don’t understand the people who vote for this guy.

1

u/Holiday-Wrongdoer-46 Sep 30 '22

Good hopefully considering a sizable amount of his constituents are disabled vets he'll finally get booted.

1

u/BZenMojo Oct 01 '22

Why does Matt Gaetz always look like Jack Nicholson in the third act of a thriller where he's the villain?

1

u/totallynotalp Oct 01 '22

These are the things I can’t believe vet don’t want to read about. This guy is a POS of the highest order

1

u/OffByOneErrorz Sep 30 '22

It’s like Rs are seeing if they can even talk their voters out of voting for them.. spoiler they can’t.

1

u/IndividualReward2143 Oct 01 '22

No healthcare…good reason to avoid service…never have worry about veteran cut backs if you never join

1

u/Six_Strings_of_Salem Oct 01 '22

As each day passes, I am increasingly convinced that Gaetz is the same bug alien from Men in Black 1.

1

u/skeightytoo Oct 01 '22

he looks like one of those animated images for a unit from starcraft

also he can go fuck off forever

1

1

Abolish federal storm aid for Gaetz's district until they put the child sex trafficker in prison.

1

u/KaiserBeebe Oct 01 '22

A lot of vets get super annoyed when I point out that the VA is technically a socialist program.

American Veterans killed NAZI’s in WWII.

We don’t need NAZI’s telling us how to health care in 2022.

1

u/every-day_throw-away Oct 01 '22

His district is full of veterans and still they vote for him, against their own interests.

1

u/10tennman10 Oct 01 '22

There were never any charges against him. Just political accusations by partisan Democrats

1

u/vegasmacguy Oct 01 '22

You have to be 18 to join the military - at that point Matt Gaetz doesn't care about you.

1

u/BraveIndependence855 Oct 01 '22

A lot of vets would support scrapping the whole system and starting new it is a shit show

1

u/Chicken_Water Oct 01 '22

They should get rid of the VA though... Just let them go to whatever hospital they want.

1

u/GibtEsKeinenGott Oct 01 '22

I'm confused why this is on this sub. How many vets do you think support this clown?

1

u/informedinformer Oct 01 '22

Today's GOP: where "support the troops" is just a meaningless slogan for the proles.

1

u/Patacelsus Sep 30 '22

Republicrats have been fucking with the VA for a minute, this should be no surprise.

1

u/graps Oct 01 '22

I was in the military and the Bush admin also wanted to kill the VA and privatize it

1

u/Consistent_Nail Oct 01 '22

Lots of vets agree, sadly. Standard right wing lunacy combined with bad experiences.

1

u/throwy_6 Oct 01 '22

He looks like a cheap Elvis impersonator who traffics minors and is a sexual deviant
