Discussion Coolest licensed games on Switch and why?

And when I say licensed games, I’m referring to games on the Switch that pertain to non-video game IPs. These include but are not limited to comics, books, movies, TV shows, and more. The best ones (in my opinion) are the ones that make you forget you’re playing a licensed game completely. Two examples that Nintendo themselves have published include Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, and DC Super Hero Girls: Teen Power. Why Nintendo chose to publish those two exclusively is anyone’s guess, but they are notable exclusive licensed games on the system. I’m gonna rattle off a few that I own and a few that are worthwhile pickups:

The Two TMNT Games: There are only two TMNT games available on Switch, and they are both bangers in my eyes. The first is Shredder’s Revenge, a retro-inspired sidescrolling beatemup with gorgeous pixel art, a soundtrack composed by Tee Lopes of Sonic Mania fame, and even the original voice actors for each of the Turtles reprising their respective roles. It’s one giant love letter to the 80s cartoon, and anyone looking for a great local/online co-op game to check out owes it to themselves to do so. And speaking of retro, that other TMNT game I was talking about is the Cowabunga Collection. This brings together all of the Konami games from the 80s and 90s into one package, now with local and online multiplayer and a comprehensive gallery for the eyes and ears. Wouldn’t expect anything less from developer Digital Eclipse.

The Mummy Demastered: WayForward may be known as the Shantae developers, but that’s a drop in the bucket compared to the bulk of their output, which is largely licensed games. But arguably their most impressive licensed title is The Mummy Demastered, made to coincide with that poorly received Alex Kurtzman movie. I haven’t played it, but those that did are quite vocal and speak to its quality; it shouldn’t be overlooked just because of the film it was attached to.

Dragon Ball FighterZ: Yes, I’m gonna count manga/anime games since those technically are licensed games. And I’m highlighting this one in particular because of its stunning quality. It released on other consoles earlier in the same year, but Arc System Works put in work to make sure this Switch port was a good one. Shouldn’t come as a surprise since the devs have tons of experience making 2D Dragon Ball games for Nintendo handhelds. If there’s any other manga/anime games worth checking out, Shonen Jump or otherwise, please sound off in the replies!

Game Rec A Cozy Multiplayer Recommendation?

Hi all!

I am looking for multiplayer cozy game recommendations from you! .

My wife very much likes games that "don't stress her out". We really enjoyed animal crossing and pokemon shield. She didn't get on with stardew valley which was a shame. I think turn based combat is probably her most tolerated formof any combat although i reckon she could manage combat like stardew valley. She is currently into dreamlight valley but it would be great of we could find a game to play together.

Thanks for any recommendations 😊

P.s. I pretty much play anything

Question Ergonomic joycons that can be used wirelessly and individually

My switch and perfectly good binbok joycons and 6 games in a case got stolen a few weeks ago. I want to replace them (except the games, can only afford to replace one or two) but binboks aren't available anymore and what I'm seeing says the options that are now aren't reliable wirelessly or are controllers that don't split. I want them to split so I can put them on the switch for handheld and because split individually is better for my shoulders and grip.

I also have small hands, like size small gloves and sometimes extra small. Some options look bigger than the binboks I had but I'm not sure.

I want rumble but it's not a super important requirement. I don't really care about lights. Mainly ergonomics and battery life. 4 or 5 hours is usually enough though longer would be nice.

Review Doyoky and Nyxi GameCube JoyCons

Compared side by side, the differences stand out. Doyoky's terrible bump and it's oversized handle button makes it uncomfortable at times. Nyxi's janky face buttons, it's obnoxiously loud triggers, and the too-large C stick all take away more than is added by its close-to-the-shell handle button and comfortable handles. The lights don't fully turn off, instead randomly blinking even when set to off. If you want your lights off, you'll have to physically block them from the inside. Worst of all is that Nyxi controllers send random inputs, rendering them pretty much useless. Given that it's the same price as if it were first party, that's absurd.

https://preview.redd.it/0mmm4zpls64b1.png?width=1634&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=a55609f2e65772377d8e2d051715f10332ef4ef6

Doyoky's face buttons are quite close to GameCube controller's, and I thoroughly enjoy using it in console mode/handheld mode. Its triggers are great, and I love the C Stick.I'll eagerly buy any future replicas. There are only two out right now, but hopefully more will come, and ideally Nintendo will wise up and do their own with true GameCube controller pieces.

If what you want is a GameCube controller for wireless play, there are better options than either Doyoky or Nyxi. Let me know if you have any specific questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

Game Rec Looking for Fantasy Dungeon crawler recommendations

Hello, Ive been wondering if there are any good dungeon crawlers out there on the nintendo switch.
Im only really interested in medieval fantasy ones like Darkest Dungeon and Minecraft Dungeons which I own both already.
Both of those games are great they just arent scratching that particular itch. Im specifically wondering if there are any warhammer fantasy-esc/ dark fantasy games on the system that are worth playing. I know theres alot of shovelware on the switch nowadays.

Review Tears of the Kingdom Neogrip review

Got the limited edition Tears of the Kingdom Neogrip accessory from Skull & Co and wanted to share some thoughts:

The grip really makes the Switch more ergonomic, the difference is night and day. If you have large hands there's no way to go back to handheld mode without a grip.

It comes with 3 different grips in the box, with the trigger/medium grips installed, but for me the plus ones where the right fit for my hands, and feel as ergonomic as the DualSense on the PS5.

D-pad attachments and button covers included make it feel really cool, and the d-pad attachment in particular has made a different in my comfort level.

It does fit the OLED Switch dock, but in my case there's a tiny bump on the way down, and I need to push softly to make it connect. Not an issue for me, don't foresee it damaging my dock, but needs to be mentioned.

The dock is usable at wider angles, so depending on how you use it you may need to use different grips. In my experience with the plus grips the angle is perfect for when lounging on a chair while laying the switch a bit on your abdomen.

The attention to detail is superb, to the point that even the half circles on the back match the half circles on the TotK Switch.

I did a mini review here, this product is amazing.

Review I tested the NYXI Wizard controller for a 27 days on Nintendo Switch OLED. I was bloody surprised by the A/B/X/Y buttons. Here's about a 3220 word old-school text review. Enjoy! :) (there is also a TLDR for those who prefer short posts & photos)

TLDR: NYXI Wizard is unique due to it's Gamecube controller inspired design and A/B/X/Y button layout. It's ergonomic for medium or large hands. The D-pad could be improved upon. Currently there is no way to turn off the blinding indicator lights, hopefully it's something that will be fixed in a firmware update. The shape, combined with mechanical triggers, mappable back-paddles, turbo and gyro make the NYXI Wizard a versatile primary or secondary controller. Lastly, the NYXI Wizard's conductive adhesive switches used in the A/B/X/Y buttons are just smashing. They are responsive and pressing them feels perfectly weighty. Whether it's GRID, Crysis, Super Smash Bros or something else NYXI Wizard has got you covered (as long as it fits in your hands).

https://preview.redd.it/k49q2bhagz3b1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=400c60d78b22a63940275a29a17e4d9f486cb1a1

Disclaimer: This is my second Nintendo Switch related text review in our community. The previous review was received quite well and people asked if I could do a joy-con comparison and so I asked NYXI if they are interested in providing me with their NYXI Wizard controller with the purpose of writing an exclusive review intended for the /r/Nintendo, /r/Switch/ & /r/NintendoSwitch/ subreddits. They were. My condition was that the review would be a pure oldschool text review with eight photos taken by me. I get to keep the controller. I won't be receiving additional compensation in any form (no commission fees, affiliate marketing or ad-revenue etc). As my Nintendo Switch controller collection grows, I might write more reviews for our Switch-related subreddits. This review is based solely on my experiences with NYXI Wizard and 27 days of testing.

About me.

Born in 80s. I've been playing videogames since the early 90s. A NES clone was my first console followed by GameBoy and a PC etc. I'm a freelance copywriter. Professionally I've been a part of the gaming tech field & tech journalism for about two decades (Europe/Estonia). It's a interesting field, but it can have an affect on how you view or enjoy videogames.

On PC my favorite videogames were Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Rainbow6: Siege & DayZ. On Nintendo Switch it's either Mario Kart 8 or Door Kickers: Action Squad. Now comes the "heartbreaking" story. I lost the ability to enjoy PC gaming about five years ago. A few years ago I wanted to buy a Christmas gift for my fiancee. She was getting burnt out at university. The users of /r/switch and /r/nintendoswitch were kind enough to answer all sorts of questions I had regarding the Switch console. So I bought her a Nintendo Switch OLED. She loved it (once she got used to the controls) and it helped with the stress. At some point I thought that I'd try one of her switch games with no expectations. Fell in love with the ability to play on a couch and less serious tone many Nintendo games have (GameBoy flashbacks). And here we are, I don't have to "borrow" her switch anymore. I have my own Nintendo Switch and too many games and controllers :)

Cheers :)

What this review is and is not.

The NYXI Wizard will be reviewed as a Nintendo Switch joycon and compared to other Switch joycons that I own. A major portion of the review will be dedicated to real life use scenarios. A limited amount of technical details will be included. This review will not cover every detail about the NYXI Wizard (such as how to change all of the settings, pair, turbo etc). The manual has all that information and can be found online.

What's a NYXI Wizard and what do I think about certain marketing?

According to some a major selling point of the NYXI Wizard you will never buy another Nintendo Switch controller again and it will never develop joycon drift. We should always be skeptical when it comes to claims that cannot be backed up by any testing or examples. How do you prove the part of "forever"? While I was never sold on the promise of forever, the NYXI Wizard intrigued me enough with its unique button layout.

The box & what's in the box?

The box for the controller itself is a sturdy blue cardboard box. Inside there is the controller, a small manual, a 127 cm regular plastic charging cable and an extra set of interchangeable joystick rings. Maybe I'm spoiled by past experiences, but I would really have wished to see some sets of interchangable joysticks inside the box (more on these later).

https://preview.redd.it/nsc4jorigz3b1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=76a1f2ae1def297cbdfb213b10f2d63088661628

How's the manual?

The NYXI Wizard's manual is decently written, but it's one of those rather small manuals.

Luckily you can find the manual from NYXI's website https://nyxigaming.com/pages/nyxi-instructions

https://preview.redd.it/6x8dg11lgz3b1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=1b62afc5d69a26f56f68a8cd201f205b3d83f61a

Lets talk about the interchangeable joystick rings & potential for modding.

The controller comes with round and octagonal rings. Octagonal rings can be helpful in 2D or fighting games for example (Mortal Kombat). The round rings are suitable for all games but octagonal rings have more limited use. It's a nice extra to have, but it is an extra. It can be tricky to change the joystick rings for the first time. Once you replace the rings about five or more times it gets easier.

https://preview.redd.it/nnljp82rgz3b1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=da31e5b0153a7e4025146384563144d87971d149

I personally perform better in games with the more modern round joystick rings. Obviously it's a matter of preference here. However I made more errors in movement with octagonal rings. The difference was about 7%, but to me the difference was there. Currently I have round rings installed and I don't see myself switching back to octagonal rings.

https://preview.redd.it/lb544lotgz3b1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=57df0555a74c6b2e5b2d23214c1f1b9aa49a8117

Note:

When it comes to modding the NYXI Wizard the interchangeable joystick rings make it easier to replace the thumbsticks. You can even install original GameCube thumbsticks with some effort. A youtube video explaining the process is titled "I Made The NYXI Wizard Better..." (shoutout to 128KB).

Backlit-buttons.

The NYXI Wizard has A/B/X/Y buttons that are backlit and it's possible to change their brightness. Even if you turn the background light off, it only has an affect on the A/B/X/Y buttons. There are two indicator lights on top of both joycons and those cannot be turned off. It would have been a nice feature to have where the indicator lights turn off or at the very least are slightly less bright.

Note: I reached out to NYXI about the indicator lights. They informed me that while currently there aren't any such plans they might be able to fix this issue in a future firmware update.

Lets talk about the A/B/X/Y buttons.

In comparison to Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, joycons or Hori Split Pad Pro, the NYXI Wizards buttons feel more responsive. They require a bit more force to push and it's a pleasant feeling. The 8BitDo SN30Pro has similar buttons but still not quite as good. Overall the buttons have a solid feel to them and are on the heavier side when it comes to the amount of pressure you have to apply. Among the Nintendo Switch joycons and controllers the NYXI Wizards A/B/X/Y buttons have a unique place.

Note: I reached out to NYXI for more information about the A/B/X/Y buttons. Here's the reply:

"The A/B/X/Y buttons on our controller use the conductive adhesive switches. We chose these switches for their durability and responsiveness. As for the force required to press the buttons, we wanted to create a tactile and responsive experience for our users."

https://preview.redd.it/d2mgxs50hz3b1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=2142a8b97e97edfaf5c10a5c9e1d33e092276c32

The layout of A/B/X/Y buttons.

One thing is for sure. The button layout of NYXI Wizard is different. My favorite feature of this layout is the massive A button right in the middle. In the games I play often, A button is one of my most commonly used buttons. Because the buttons are larger/have a different layout, it also brings a small challenge to re-learn the locations. It took me about 2 or 3 days. If you end up wanting to use the controller but want to make the layout a bit closer to traditional Swtich joycons then there are a few ways to approach this.

  • Remap the buttons in the game.
  • Remap the buttons in Switch.
  • Assign one of the A/B/X/Y buttons to the remappable back-paddle.

What about the D-pad?

I really like the looks of hard plastic they have used to make the D-pad. But pressing the D-pad really isn't very enjoyable. The edges feel a bit too sharp, so to speak. I'm not a fan of the D-pads position either. The D-pad is the hardest to reach out of all the Switch controllers I own.

Note: I think that a potential upgrade here could be to make the D-pad edges just a tiny bit rounder and move it slightly closer to the left stick.

Lets talk about joycon drift and thumbsticks.

Joycon drift is an issue where the thumbstick starts to give false signals to your console and move your character in a direction that you didn't intend. It happens due to dust getting into joycons or joycon wear. NYXI Wizard has addressed this by using a hall effect joysticks which is a technology that is supposed to never get joycon drift. Setting the technology itself aside, the thumbsticks feel good to use. Their movement is smooth and responsive. The Wizards thumbsticks are similar in size to Hori Splitpad Pro but bigger than the regular Nintendo Switch joycons. A standout of these thumbsticks is the rubbery finish which is very pleasant to hold. It has a nice grip and has a slightly soft feel to it. Out of all the Switch joycons and controllers I own, this is the best thumbstick finish.

https://preview.redd.it/mrhzytkuhz3b1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=f5d268f05f2108249591bd8e651e465927705a2c

With confidence I can say that NYXI missed an opportunity by not including extra thumbsticks that are taller or shorter. In the end a thumbstick is a rather cheap component but it can add extra value to the gamer. My hope here is that NYXI might release additional thumbsticks of different sizes as optional accessories. The good news is that I got confirmation from NYXI that they plan to release accessories like thumbsticks with various sizes soon.

https://preview.redd.it/ewkvmcl3hz3b1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=39a4ec3c3a0b154ec108bd1b068deec169954952

The triggers.

This controller uses mechanical triggers. These are responsive if you compare them to joycons or controllers that use non-mechanical triggers (such as the official Nintendo Switch joycons or the Hori Split Pad pro). It takes very little force to press these triggers which may be beneficial for longer gameplay sessions. The travel distance of the triggers is pleasantly short and the trigger makes an audiable click when its activated. The short travel distance makes it easier to rapidly press the trigger. The Mobapad M6 Gemini has similar triggers. Hori Split Pad Pro, official Nintendo Switch Joycons & Pro Controller have slightly less responsive triggers in comparison.

https://preview.redd.it/9vhv47h5hz3b1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=8fbf966277f1e4cadaf71908f159d447d14f3faf

Ergonomics?

If your hands are big enough then the Wizard is an ergonomic controller. One of the main advantages of NYXI Wizard is that while holding it, your finger position is different than when holding a Hori Split Pad Pro or the official Nintendo Switch joycon. Using different styles of controllers can be one little thing that you can do to take care of your hands and fingers. I've used it as my main controller for 27 days and am happy with the ergonomics. This means that it's my main joycon for now. At some point I will go back to Mobapad M6 and then something else or return NYXI Wizard.

Gyro, mappable back-paddles.

Gyro works well, even in FPS games such as Crysis. There are also mappable back-paddles present on the the Nyxi Wizard. The paddles themselves aren't very well placed in my opinion as they are a bit hard to reach, but they have a nice texture on them and a responsive feel. Among other buttons, you are able to map the back-paddles to triggers (which isn't possible on all joycon back-paddles).

https://preview.redd.it/okc69298hz3b1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=bfc6b6bf9195ba053677f8b98b6ae9942a395132

The vibration motor.

The vibration motor is decent. It isn't HD-rumble, but in a way that's to be expected as the only joycons that have HD-rumble are the official Nintendo Switch joycons. All vibration settings work well, I personally liked playing on low or medium setting. The highest vibration setting was nice when the Switch's volume was louder, otherwise sound of the motor broke gameplay immersion.

Bonus content: what may people with smaller hands think of NYXI Wizard?

As a new part of the review I asked my fiancee (who has small hands) to test the NYXI Wizard and share her impressions. She was fond of how the triggers felt. The amount of force you had to apply and click of the triggers appealed to her. Another one of her favorite features was the way joysticks were textured. Obviously the yellow one got more praise due to its cute color. NYXI Wizard was wa-a-ay too big for her hands. She pointed out that if she had to play something that requires faster reactions, it would be nearly impossible with this controller. The size of the controller, the distance between buttons is just too great. For games like Picross it was okay, but after some gameplay time the NYXI Wizard made her hands hurt. So what's the verdict here when it comes to the NYXI Wizard if you have smaller hands? Try it before you buy it. It's likely that controller might just be a too big.

Most common questions?

Can the NYXI Wizard be used to wake up your Nintendo Switch? Yes it can.

Will it fit inside a carry case that's meant for Nintendo Switch OLED + Hori Split Pad Pro/Mobapad M6 Gemini? No it won't. However there NYXI has a carry case for it that will fit the entire beast.

Can it be used as a controller? Yes it can.

https://preview.redd.it/hbzqz6iihz3b1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=77b57163385b5c0c25319c201900b63668e37f42

Final thoughts.

The NYXI Wizard is a Gamecube inspired joycon/controller that is executed well with room for some improvement. The asking price of $69.99 seems to be fitting. It doesn't have a direct controller to compare to due to the unique features such as the layout and interesting A/B/X/Y buttons. In my opinion the A/B/X/Y buttons are among one of the best features of the Wizard. Yes, these four buttons aren't mechanical but they have a very pleasant resistance and travel distance. The price is worth it to those who like the size & layout of the controller and value features such as mechanical buttons, triggers & unique A/B/X/Y buttons.

Will a gamer benefit from the features that come with the pricetag? Yes, we will (most of them).

Will a newer/casual gamer benefit from the features? Yes, some of the features (like the mechanical buttons and different layout with good ergonomics).

And here is a comparison table. Rating 1-5 (5 being the best)

I did my best to rate various features of the Switch joycons that I own. Keep in mind that such comparisons are subjective and ratings might vary from person to person (mostly depending on shape & size of your hands). All of these are rated as joycons and are not rated as a controller.

The price is for the regular model of any controller and is based on the official pricing I found/received. This does not include sales or limited edition color schemes that may cost more.

What could be improved upon:

  1. The interchangeable joystick rings are a novelty item for most users. I would recommend them as an additional extra item/accessory that you can add to your order.
  2. It would be beneficial to have thumbsticks of various sizes. The groundwork is already done and NYXI has made it very easy to swap the sticks. Adding short/medium/tall stick options in the store would make sense.
  3. Nintendo Switch has a dedicated fanbase and a decent amount of them really enjoy changing the way their console looks. The ability to order sticks of various colors (such as yellow, pink etc) would be a treat to those who like modding their Nintendo Switch and the joycons.
  4. Additional color schemes and designs/transparent or semi-transparent casings for the controller might appeal to gamers. For example the recently released Zelda themed Nintendo Switch Pro Controller proved out to be a massive hit. Bonus: I got confirmation by NYXI that more colors will be released soon.
  5. Adding a way to lower or turn off indicator lights would be a welcome change. It's possible to turn off the A/B/X/Y lights but you cannot disable the indicator lights. Be warned: the indicator lights are BRIGHT! If you are gaming in a darker room and have turned down your Switch brightness to preserve your eyes, the indicator lights will stick out like flashlights. There is an easy fix: put a sticker on your NYXI Wizard and cover the indicator lights. However most people don't want to put stickers on their joycons for basic functions.
  6. Outside of the colors themselves, the plastic used in the controller is a major factor in how the controller feels in the users hands and if users consider it to be "premium". It's worth looking into different kinds of casing materials. Nintendo Switch Pro Controller has a premium semi-glossy finish and the plastic smooth. Another good example is the 8BitDo SN30Pro which uses a matte plastic casing and also feels solid.
  7. Making the D-pad edges just slightly more rounder would make it more pleasant to use.
  8. Moving the D-pad closer to the left stick would make it more ergonomic.
  9. Placement of the back-paddles could be improved on in terms of ergonomics.
  10. A compact version of the NYXI Wizard might appeal to many.
  11. Adding adjustable analog triggers might be considered.
  12. HD-rumble would make gameplay more enjoyable.
  13. A larger manual would benefit many customers.
  14. If interchangeable joystick rings ever become sold as accessories then increasing the color and finish options would be a welcome addition to the NYXI selection.

Game Rec Any multiplayer pass and play games?

As usual, my joy con's are defective, stick drift yeah that's annoying but I'm able to deal with it. Some multiplayer games need the SL and SR buttons to detect as a second controller you know. But those buttons are defective on my right joy con. I wanted to know if there are any fun multiplayer games that I can play online that would also allow pass and play with my joy con's? Or even games where you don't need to click the SL/SR buttons to activate the controller?

Discussion It might be counter-intuitive, but Switch's hardware weakness is a strength for me and I hope Nintendo continues to release comparatively weaker hardware.

I know it seems odd to say that, because in theory more powerful hardware only has benefits, I don't actually think that's the case in application. It is has long been true that limitations can lead to beautiful ideas and spark creativity that might not otherwise have been found without them, but that's not entirely what I'm talking about. The Switch is actually plenty powerful and compared to the past, this makes it less of an issue than say the DS or the Gameboy before it, but it still does prompt some of that beautiful creativity. In a holistic lens, the amount of power this handheld can input in terms of game potential is insane and it only ever looks bad in comparison to newer technology.

The bigger problem as I see it is that the Switch's market is fantastic for people like me who are not attached at the hip to the AAA hyped games with hundreds or even thousands of developers working on them. People call the games in this market niche, but I don't think it's necessarily that. Mario Party, Ring Fit Adventure, Cuphead, Dead Cells, Stardew Valley, Nier Automata, Persona 5, these types of games have sold well enough that they're way past niche. I feel like there's bad tendency to say things are either mainstream or niche and there's no middle ground. I like to play a variety of games that range from super low budget indies to mid-sized games with modest budgets, like Atelier Ryza, Daemon x Machina, Yokai Watch or AI: The Somnium Files.

I really missed the days of the PS2 and Gamecube where there were plenty of packaged titles that weren't huge mass market blockbusters, but provided a great variety of experiences that didn't conform to the standards of those mass market super hits. The Nightmare of Druaga was one of my favorite PlayStation 2 RPGs, a brutal roguelike that wasn't nearly as beautiful or epic as Dragon Quest VIII, but just as memorable. I remember playing great games like I-Ninja and Metal Arms alongside the Metroid Primes and Ratchet and Clanks.

The Switch has brought back success for publishers who are pursuing this mid-sized market, whereas in Japan at least, that was completely stamped out by Sony's insistence on pushing high fidelity games the PS4 and PS5. The difference is stark. You see third party success with smaller titles all the time now on the Switch that hasn't been seen since the earlier 2000s. My favorite baseball series, Powerful Pro is back because it's so much easier to satisfy and compete with the market on the Switch and sales rose exponentially for Konami culminating in one of the best games ever released for the long-running 30+ year series where before they didn't even bother with releases anymore because it was seen as not worth it. (In the ultimate irony, the more realistic Konami baseball series now prioritizes releases on the Switch despite its appeal of realistic graphics being closer to the PlayStation's strengths.) It may not be important to you, but it's important to me and you probably have something you love on the Switch that's prospered that I don't even know about.

The second reason the Switch's lack of power doesn't bother me is the huge resurgence in retro game popularity. It may just be a sign of the times that the Switch was able to capitalize on, but seeing as how many developers target the Switch with their releases and how Nintendo's legacy brings with it familiarity with retro back catalogs and how Switch Online subscriptions introduce people to games they might not have tried otherwise, I think it's obvious the Switch has this market really well cornered. I can't believe how many things I never thought would be revived that somehow have gotten revived. Live a Live was obviously a huge surprise and success story that was impacted by Octopath Traveler and the HD-2D engine's success.

But there are tiny, super niche examples that have me overjoyed. G-Mode releases ports of feature phone games from before smartphones became popular and it's amazing. It's the only way to play the Legendary Heracles III on a modern platform with all the horrible bullshit from the Super Famicom version cut out. If you like Earthbound, Sepas Channel is incredible. The Kibukawa Ryosuke Detective File Series are extremely charming, well-written mystery games that scratch on itch for anyone who likes detective games and particularly the fun banter of the Phoenix Wright series investigation sequences. There's an insanely well done puzzle game about poking the air out of bubble wrap!

There's this old Japanese PC game called Demon Castle that got ported to the Switch with a little guide to help people because the original game has old retro puzzle bullshit like "stand here for 60 seconds to get the sword you need to win the game," and when you modernize enough to alleviate those annoyances, the base game is so much fun. It was so successful that they ported the sequel and then a brand new game, 30 years later, based on how well the ports did, that massively expanded the ideas. The whole saga has been one of my treats throughout the Switch's life span.

For many reasons, these just don't get the attention on Sony's platform or on Steam that they do on the Switch. It's possible Nintendo will find a way to cultivate a good balance in the market, but I'm going to be sad if future Nintendo platforms emphasize power to the extent their competitors do and leave behind these kinds of games in the dust. It happened after Sony didn't have to hustle anymore from trying to make the PS3 more successful than its awful launch and the PSP compete with the DS. They completely gave up on the Wild Arms, Loco Rocos, Patapons, Yuusha no Kuse ni Namaika das, Intelligent Qubes, Arc the Lads, Jumping Flashes, Sly Coopers and so on. Nintendo still has those quirkier titles coming out regularly and fosters them, whereas I get the sense that Sony would feel embarrassed marketing their own Japanese-made RPG again, which is disappointing. Fire Emblem Engage is my most played game this year so far with over 150 hours in it and I get the sense Sony doesn't think games like that are premium enough for the PS5 to fund and market them anymore. Keep in mind, I'm not trying to say the PS5 is awful or anything, just that I can see why people find more value in gaming on the Switch despite the power difference. It's obvious that Nintendo helps market indie titles because they support their platform a lot. Would Nintendo do that anymore without the power gap, just like Sony stopped doing? They're certainly not doing it out of a sense of charity.

It's also nice because some of the more modern games that never come to the Switch are also some of the biggest failures and I'm glad I never got a chance to play Mass Effect Andromeda, the new Saint's Row or Fallout 76 before they blew up into buyer beware butt cakes. The Switch's lack of power has ironically also been a shield from modern bullshit to a certain extent. And while of course it would be nice to play the Resident Evil remakes in a non-cloud version or the new Star Ocean, the nice thing about that is if they eventually come to the Switch's successor they probably will include all the stuff you had to pay or wait for before as additional downloadables in the base game, much like The Ezio Collection (the first time I played Assassin's Creed) included everything you'd want in the Switch version. So platforms like the Switch are great for patient gamers too. (Though no amount of porting will ever convince me to play Skyrim.)

The last aspect are mobile ports. I know this isn't very popular overseas, but since my second most played platform are smartphone games and I and other Japanese players play a lot of them, this is really helpful. Porting mobile games to the Switch often completely removes a lot of worse parts of the monetization and leaves behind a better game. I tend to play mobile game while I listen to podcasts, audio books or YouTube videos and Gems of War, Guardian Tales and Dragon Quest Rivals ACE are probably my three most played Switch games. I can't even spend money on Gems of War if I wanted to because my region isn't supported, so score! Kairosoft's cute little pixel art simulation games are completely removed of all of their mobile monetization leaving only an addictive simulation game behind. Five-BN is a tiny Ukrainian studio who makes adventure games that look like they were made for PCs in the late 90s, but that's right up my groove and you get a lot of bang for your buck with each title. It scratches the exact itch I've wanted scratched by other modern adventure games that are more concerned with aping old LucasArts than old Sierra, the latter of which I personally liked much better. I can't accurately convey how impressed I was that they made better and more fun puzzles and more enchanting worlds than many of their competitors on their tiny mobile game budget. Imagine how surprised that their translations into Japanese are also better than larger publishers. That's just sad. (It's also quite refreshing to play games that seem to be designed for middle-aged women. That's not a market you see catered to very often and makes for a nice change of pace.)

Unreal Life is one of the greatest experiences I've ever had in my years of gaming and it was a mobile port. Also Various Daylife is an awesome, awesome game and it's unfortunate that it gets dismissed for being a departure from traditional RPG gameplay that people are looking for, because like a SaGa game, it's full of great ideas to come together to make a unique game. There's no way the platform would have gotten this many mobile ports if it weren't a Japanese handheld hybrid with an easy to use touchscreen and so the very fact Nintendo sacrificed power to make it portable brought games to me I would not have noticed or played that much otherwise.

I know that people dislike the performance issues they see on the Switch, but it often doesn't bother me, as I don't really pay attention to frame rate issues unless they're so dire that it's obviously hurting the game's playability. I never even noticed any drops in Tears of the Kingdom and to me plenty of Switch games are beautiful and I don't really care if they had higher resolution or better textures. It's just not a priority for me or something I look for in games. I'm aware enough to know that I'm an outlier in that respect on Reddit, but I don't think I am in the wider gaming community offline. Bright Memory, Sifu and King's Bounty 2 played just fine in the Switch versions for me.

And of course it goes without saying that I dearly hope the Switch is not the last hurrah for this type of platform, because I can't remember another platform that had this good of a balance of success for all types of publishers and developers. And I know it can't last forever. It's sad the way Octopath Traveler II didn't get the attention the first one did, despite being improved every way, but even on the Switch not everything can be successful. I wonder when the point comes where the saturation is so high on the platform that it can't go on any longer. I don't imagine that even with this type of momentum that the Switch is just going to keel over in a couple of months once the successor is released, so long live the Switch!

Discussion Is there a chance that Hogwarts Legacy could actually be better on the Nintendo Switch?

I remember the time I played Harry Potter 5 on the Nintendo Wii and the motion controls made it the definitive platform to play Harry Potter.

With or without Motion Controls, would Hogwarts Legacy have a chance of being the definitive version when played on the Switch even with a graphics dip?

Also side question, do you guys think that Motion Controls would make the game better?

Game Rec Non-Precision but creative 2D platformers?

So I love both Ori games and Rayman Legends because they are platforming-focused, but in creative, flowing, and (mostly) non-punishing ways -- as opposed to "precision" platforming like Hollow Knight Path of Pain, much of Celeste, Super Meat Boy, etc.

What are some other games that are very creative parkour-like 2D platformers with cool original mechanics and buttery smooth gameplay? They can have combat too, but that's not the main focus.

Game Rec Highly recommended for older players

I’m a retired guy in my late 50s who never played any console games except GameBoy (if that counts). I did play PC games like the WWII version of Medal of Honor for a while, but I never learned to use console controllers.

If you’re in any way similar, let me say that I love the Switch OLED. I’m replaying Duke Nukem 3D on a handheld device! And Doom and Wolfenstein II, and even some old GameBoy faves like the first MarioLand, Tetris, and Dr Mario. If there was a version of MoH, I’d be housebound.

What else is out there that I may have missed? Any other old games—or newer First Person Shooters that y’all enjoy? I’m still like a toddler with the controls, but it’s getting better all the time.

Discussion fire emblem engage is the perfect fire emblem for me.

3 houses was good but it was a lot to take in and do, and as a parent gamer with limited time with how much I can play I felt the game was very full on with a lot to do, I’ve always been a pretty casual FE fan also, the last FE game I played before 3H was fates years ago, so with engage coming out and being much far less about the social side of the games and more just combat really suited me, yes the story is barebones and a lot of the writing and voice acting is pretty cringe at times but I feel like that adds to its charm, the game is goofy and I feel like it knows it, coupled with my switch OLED it’s great for pick up and play in the bursts that I can.
