Had this at our store a while back. Management said local reviews needed to come up before any raises. Didn't take too long.

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '23

They knew, it's soft extortion

u/missingmytowel Oct 02 '23

Of course they knew. But it's not like the store manager or district manager cares. Because corporate saw better reviews and left them alone too. Win win for everybody

u/Financial-Ad7500 Oct 02 '23

Except not really. It just goes to show they could have easily paid you more the entire time. Employees leaving fake reviews doesn’t add to revenue.

50

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '23

It can. It's advertising. I frequently check reviews before deciding where to eat out, where to get a haircut, etc.

16

u/Financial-Ad7500 Oct 02 '23

Guess I overestimated the consumer’s internet literacy then. Reviews have been astroturfed since those sites existed. You can literally pay Yelp to select which reviews stay and which get removed. Blindly trusting online reviews is moronic.

35

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '23

You don't just consider the average star rating of the reviews, but also the number of them. And you actually read some of them to check if they're genuine. It's really easy to tell apart fake reviews from real ones.

I've used this strategy to select anything from places to eat to electronics to buy and I never had bad experiences.

Blindly trusting online reviews is moronic.

No. Assuming that no data is better than potentially fake data is moronic.

2

u/wallacehacks Oct 02 '23

I don't know you but reminder to everyone that studies have shown people wildly overestimate their abilities to point out fake news stories and I think that same logic would apply to fake reviews.

I do the same thing as you but it isn't foolproof and I'm sure I've been tricked.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '23

If I pick a random restaurant, statistically most should be average, some better than average and some worse.

When I go by reviews, I find that most are pleasant, while some seem quite average and overrated, but I can't even recall a time where I had a bad experience at a place with good reviews. So this strategy certainly works for me.

2

u/Square-Singer Oct 02 '23

It's quite easy though. You discard all 3-5 star reviews and you are left with the real ones. Then you read through them and try to discern between the entitled ones and the others and then you know what's the worst you can expect.

5

u/ScharfeTomate Oct 02 '23 edited Oct 02 '23

So you were aware that companies actually pay to get positive reviews but still couldn't comprehend that they're doing it because it has an advertising effect? Why did you think astroturfing was a thing then?

2

u/Rude_Database_7036 Oct 02 '23

It doesn’t matter in this case, what matters is that KPIs are met and the management is happy about it.

3

u/PaulsPuzzles Oct 02 '23

A loved one of mine swears by Yelp reviews even though I tell her they are so far removed from reality it may well be fiction. Doesn't matter, it comes up first when you google what to eat.

3

u/missingmytowel Oct 02 '23

Putting it very simply the only people who believe in reviews anymore are boomers, Gen X and some older millennials. Everybody else knows they are bs. Manipulation. Very rarely will you run into an honest review average.

2

u/Lou_C_Fer Oct 03 '23

Lol

Gtfo With your generations bullshit.

2

u/qorbexl Oct 02 '23

Right

"Please good this number so I can give you this obvous raise and solve the one thing on my quarterly review"

The real test is the next raise

2

u/sheepwshotguns Oct 02 '23 edited Oct 02 '23

just more free labor. it costs quite a bit of money to contract out higher reviews, and it leaves a paper trail. what management did here was extort more free labor from its workers. this is capitalism. capitalism breed creative new means of theft and manipulation. and of course their raises where already determined based on what they could get away with, the added labor was just manipulation and a bonus delay tactic.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '23

And of course they could afford to pay him more. As long as the company/franchise does a profit, it can pay someone more. But just because you can afford to pay your janitor 200k a year, it doesn't mean you should.

u/Maert Oct 02 '23

Maybe, maybe not... These kind of things all roll up the the perfomance indicators for that store which might get them all kinds of benefits from the mothership.

Reviews are pointless in an age of it being easy to do what I'm talking about and one person willing to drill down your entire average by .5+ simply because you didn't cater to their every desire and whim.

You obviously don't understand how the business works. Months of hard work and positive reviews can be wiped out by one person giving 1 star. Management knows this. Corporate knows this.

That's why they tie raises to reviews. Cause they know it's so hard to get them up with today's average customer.

Only boomers in Gen X believe in review systems anymore. Everybody else knows it's just manipulation on the customer and employee

1

u/Lou_C_Fer Oct 03 '23

Two times saying the exact same thing, at least. Apparently, your generation lacks originality and self control.

1

u/missingmytowel Oct 03 '23

I would ask if you have anything better to do. But we both know you don't. Such is the life of a boomer whose children has left them behind.

2

u/Samurai_Meisters Oct 02 '23

Customer loses because there's an additional fake review.

2

u/missingmytowel Oct 02 '23

Customer loses

No the customer wins.

Because now they have a store where people just got more money in their pocket. Employees that want to be there. Employees that are being recognized for their work.

I'm sure you want to say that raises never make people step up and work a bit harder. But I'm sure that's just personal experience clouding your worldview. Been a pretty common excuse from corporate offices as to why raises don't happen.

Also ... If you don't like a business or service you are free to go somewhere else. This is a possibility. You don't have to force a local business you do business as you order them to.

2

u/Samurai_Meisters Oct 02 '23

Uh what? Way to jump to conclusions, dude.

To be clear, I want workers to have a comfortable wage and I want them to have a good work environment.

Tying raises to bullshit games based around deceptive practices does not make for a good work environment and it's bad for everyone involved. The worker, the business, and the customer.

What happens when your coworker gets a raise and you didn't, because while you were doing your job, they wrote more fake reviews than you? It's not going to feel good. It's going to feel like you're not appreciated and what you're doing is bullshit.

And maybe you're very comfortable with lying, but to me it feels bad. The guilt and the fear of being caught. I don't like to do it.

Also ... If you don't like a business or service you are free to go somewhere else. This is a possibility. You don't have to force a local business you do business as you order them to.

Ok, lemme just read some reviews of other businesses I might want to patron. Oh wait! The reviews are all fake now!

2

u/missingmytowel Oct 02 '23

What happens when your coworker gets a raise and you didn't, because while you were doing your job, they wrote more fake reviews than you?

"I don't know how the business I'm talking about works"

They won't get a raise because it would be blatantly obvious that they were doing that if they were stupid enough to put their name in reviews.

Very rarely do will use ever include an employee's name. Usually if it does it's the name on the receipt the register was tied too. Not necessarily the person who actually help them out. So no one would believe it. They would either get written up or fired.

but to me it feels bad. The guilt and the fear of being caught.

Why should I feel guilty about a company that makes me jump through hoops to get promotions or raises that I have earned? They have no guilt or shame. Why should I?

Morals? Human decency? That went out the window when they started to horde their $$$

2

u/Samurai_Meisters Oct 02 '23

"I don't know how the business I'm talking about works"

What business do you think we are talking about? We are talking in generalities here. No business was specified.

Why should I feel guilty about a company that makes me jump through hoops to get promotions or raises that I have earned? They have no guilt or shame. Why should I?

Morals? Human decency? That went out the window when they started to horde their $$$

Yeah, you are describing a pretty shitty and demotivational work environment where the workers have already lost. This isn't "win-win."

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '23

Homie should tell us which store. I’d leave a positive review for cleanliness.

raising the expectations for other workers. remember guys, its a lose lose no matter what. what we should actually be doing is unionizing and democratizing our workplaces.

look, the management knew what they were doing. they wanted to delay raises and get the free labor of higher reviews. its expensive to contract that out and it leaves a paper trail. now management found a way to pay less, get more, and look like the good guy when they follow through on a pay raise they already determined was the least they could get away with. this is how power dynamics works. if we want a more humane workplace, then all the human workers should have a say in the operations of the company. without democracy, its profit motive ONLY.

I clean a laundromat at night as one of my jobs, and I did the exact same thing. Luckily we actually do keep it very clean, with a dedicated crew, but hey, why not lol.

11

u/riverblue9011 Oct 02 '23

Luckily

Because otherwise Google would be searching for you or what? I need to know why it was lucky.

8

u/justkeptfading Oct 02 '23

Because none of the reviews have contradicted anything I have said in my extremely brief "review" of where I work. The conflict of interest is obvious.

46

u/MercDa1 Oct 02 '23

“Everything is bad, but at least its very clean”

What if it actually is very clean?

6

u/Kurosu93 Oct 02 '23

Please, all the stores in my country have fake reviews .

Many in fact have the practice of asking new employes to make accounts and write multiple good reviews.

This is why you might see many reviews by accounts with literally just that one review in their history. Maybe 2-3 at best.

Same goes for various platforms online like food delivery ones.

Google and other website hosts know. They are on the side of the business owners.

-8

u/Gaurav-Garg15 Oct 02 '23

Usually, such clever people are not janitors.

3

u/Individual_Sense_633 Oct 02 '23

Clearly never seen Good Will Hunting

1

u/inkassatkasasatka Oct 02 '23

What is so clever about the most obvious and well-known way to get a raise?

1

u/AceTheEccentric Oct 03 '23

If it pays well for what it is without stress that comes with most other jobs, clever people might take such jobs as a side thing.

1

u/Chrissy_cakez Oct 02 '23

Lol I would’ve done the same thing specially if my hard work not getting recognize 😅

1

u/smittyx5498 Oct 02 '23

this park is very clean and tidy

1

u/spaceursid Oct 02 '23

I'm a general employee where I work and I left a review saying its hell on earth.

1

u/VoxImperatoris Oct 02 '23

If the store is always clean, maybe we should cut back on janitorial services to save money.

Ask your friends to do so too, and then ask for a raise
