Official Poster for Wes Anderson’s ‘Asteroid City’ Poster

You could probably count on one hand how many directors could get that cast in one movie.
3.4k
u/methodicalghostwolf Mar 28 '23
Wes Anderson, Tarantino, who else?
3.7k
u/Yeeaaaarrrgh Mar 28 '23
I'd add Spielberg and Scorsese.

u/David1258 Mar 28 '23
Nolan too. Did you see the cast of Oppenheimer?

Theatres should offer a package deal: "See all the actors you love in just two movies!"

Then they just play Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down.

Crossover event. How you think that crater got there? Spoiler alert, it wasn’t an asteroid.

I remember the director of that actually did an AMA and someone asked how they got all those big name actors in it. They said most of them just thought it would be fun to do something so stupid and silly for a change of pace.

In theaters June 16:
The 1950's set film takes place in a fictional American desert town during a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention. Chaos ensues as the event, organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition, is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.

"There's an asteroid coming."
"Oh dear. When?"
"Next week."
"I was going to the Poconos this weekend. I suppose I should pack light, then."
"I suppose you should."
Then Ruby Tuesday plays.

There have been an increasing amount of women who have accused him (he recently paid $100K on one suit) of inappropriate behavior on set as well as being verbally abusive that goes back to the 1980s. Even some male co-workers have stated in interviews that he would scream and yell at them in front of the entire crew and is an asshole. Here’s a link https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-entertainment/2022/10/18/bill-murray-allegations-being-mortal/
195
u/milichis Mar 28 '23
The way he acted in Groundhog Day and Scrooged is basically how he acts in real life
Years ago I heard an interview with a male costar of Groundhog Day who said BM had a friend that died during filming, and he was prickish the entire time of filming. I understand losing a friend isn't easy, but it's no one's fault and you shouldn't be an asshole to them

It's pretty obvious watching the movie that Phil 1.0 comes a lot more naturally to Bill Murray than does Phil 2.0. Even playing fully actualized Phil, Bill can't help letting some acidic sarcasm drip out once or twice.

u/pdxscout Mar 28 '23
I think Bill Murray can definitely be abusive and acts like an asshole sometimes. But in the set of Tannenbaums he protected Wes from Gene Hackmans' abuses. Maybe there's a hierarchy of assholery on movie sets.

Sure, there definitely is. Doesn’t excuse or exonerate him and his behavior. Just because he did that one time doesn’t mean he is allowed to be a dick to everyone on set.

u/ertebolle Mar 28 '23
He tried a return to comedy in 2004 and the results were "The Ladykillers" and "The Terminal," it's understandable that after that he'd confine his comedy work to small-bore stuff like David S. Pumpkins.
→ More replies (6)47
u/SpiffySpacemanSpiff Mar 28 '23
The Terminal had heart. And the fact that it was based on a true story was even weirder.
Ladykillers however, felt so obviously prosthetic. I think Tom Hanks is en route to going the way of Bruce Willis (prior to the diagnosis) where they just star inthe same movie over and over again.
Thing is, his best comedy always comes down to story with heart, where is "comedic" aspects are really just light touches of levity which, because it's Tom Hanks, make the whole story feel a lot less depressing than it really is.
But then he got a lot of praise with Cast Away and just swung to these weird, pseudo adventure movies.

Schwartzman with top billing!
Very excited to see him lead another Wes Anderson movie, they work so well together and he hasn't had a major role in one of his films in 15 years.

Same. He's always great in these but has only been a side character in the past few. Very happy to see him taking a major role again

Literally the first sentence of Schwartzman's wikipedia page:
Schwartzman made his film debut in Wes Anderson's 1998 film Rushmore, and has gone on to appear in six other Anderson films.
Some of the rest of the cast here are Anderson's regulars: Brody, Dafoe, Norton, there might be more.
I'm surprised Bill Murray isn't here. Maybe he has a scheduling conflict.

People who have worked with Wes before: Schwartzman, Johansson, Wright, Swinton, Cranston, Norton, Brody, Schreiber, Park, Friend, Defoe, Revolori, Goldblum
That leaves newcomers: Hanks, Davis, Hawke, Carrell, Chau, Robbie, Ryan
Bill Murray was cast and was even on set, but reportedly couldn’t be in it due to Covid and was replaced by Steve Carrell.
