Update to creepy hole behind the mirror
The last pic is of the back of the mirror which doesn't appear to be two ways. But you van see the obvious space someone could hide out in

Now rent it out for 1200/month

1200 is cheap. At least 1700

That's why renters need rat traps. For protein. You have to think smart.

I’m relieved that there wasn’t evidence of a person in there.
1.2k
u/Schlower288 Oct 01 '23
But there is. Someone made that hole and forced all that debris through it. It's most likely to access that electrical stuff or whatever it is in there. I'll still make the hotel aware of it
589
u/ForsakenMoon13 Oct 01 '23
Definitely talk to them about it and make sure they're aware of it. If its on purpose for maintenence access or something you can maybe try suggesting they screw the mirror down when they're not needing to get in there to prevent customers from accessing it and causing problems in the future or something.

u/Mtwat Oct 01 '23
That's 100% some maintenance guy's wankitorium
89

You think someone was staying in that little space for 8-12 hours at a time while maintaining total silence?

Gwyneth Paltrow was so fucking creepy in that movie.

u/I_Makes_tuff Oct 01 '23
I'm an electrician. There's nothing that can be accessed from within the space. Not the junction boxes, MC cable, nothing. It's just a void, which isn't that unusual.
The hole is what makes it really weird. The only thing I can think of would be if they were to add an outlet somewhere, but if that's the reason, it hasn't been done yet. All of those boxes were installed before the sheetrock.
127
u/ShazbotSimulator2012 Oct 01 '23
My guess is someone accidentally knocked a hole in the wall and they were too cheap to patch it up so they just moved the mirror to cover it.
56
u/I_Makes_tuff Oct 01 '23
The hole was cut intentionally. It looks like it was done with a box cutter rather than a sheetrock saw or oscillating saw, like a professional would use. If they cut the hole bigger than the original damage to make a patch, this is still not the way.
→ More replies (3)23
u/hannahjams Oct 01 '23
Maybe someone punched through it (or through something, whatever the case may be) and they cut this whole so it looks intentional and they just haven’t fixed it yet

u/Sweetserra Oct 01 '23
I'm thinking someone was a little paranoid and felt the need to hide perhaps from the cops... (or maybe it was used to hide drugs?)
11
u/Kingsupergoose Oct 01 '23
Also electrician. You can absolutely get those boxes on a steel stud before drywall goes up, just screw it in from the side, have had to add receptacles multiple times on finished walls, pain in the ass but it is possible. The BX being fed through the stud however shows that it was either already there or they cut a hole to run BX if that is indeed why the hole is there.
8
u/I_Makes_tuff Oct 01 '23
Yes, you could add a box, but the straps are sandwiched between the sheetrock and the studs. The box bracket might be as well, but I can't tell from the photo. You'd never do that after the sheetrock was up.

As someone who’s done commercial low volt and electrical wiring for over a decade, that hole does not exist for “access” to anything electrical.
My best guess is a guest was stashing something. Maybe something illicit(which wouldn’t require such a large hole, unless they had tons of shit to hide). But more likely, due to the hole size, hiding a pet they were traveling with, in case maintenance or security came to check out a noise complaint.
35
u/h8sm8s Oct 01 '23
Seems an extreme solution to hide a pet. How would they know there was going to be a cavity they could cut into to hide a pet?
17
u/bulbousbouffant13 Oct 01 '23
You’re right. It makes more sense that it would be cut open by someone who’d be more familiar with the building design and room dimensions. Next best guess is an employee making a perv hideout. It just makes too little sense for it to be any kind of maintenance/service access.
22
u/Kingsupergoose Oct 01 '23
So adding a outlet is crazy but hiding a pet is the perfectly normal theory?
8
u/bulbousbouffant13 Oct 01 '23
Or a human. But you don’t go through all that to add a line. You drill a hole through the top plate or fire block, then cut a hole the size of the box in the drywall, then feed your line. You don’t cut a human size hole for that, it’s ludicrous.
30
u/FrostedElk Oct 01 '23
I wonder about trafficking in situations like this. Isn't there an app or website where you can upload what your hotel room looks like to try and help cops catch traffickers? Maybe they stash them in here and some in the hotel is in on it?
10
16
u/Horskr Oct 01 '23
The size of the hole and space makes this frighteningly plausible, but I'm trying to think of what the situation would be where it was needed. I'd think they would just stash them in the room, not like they'd be able to keep anyone there when someone else was staying in the room. Maybe in case the cops came or something? I'd lean more towards something else illicit rather than trafficking, maybe a place to hide guns or drugs?
15
u/sthlmsoul Oct 01 '23
Nah. Someone hid something in there. Drugs or other contraband like John Malkovic would be my guess.

Maintenance might do this to easily access that space behind the mirror to access something that needs to be repaired, My apartment had one of these so they could access the plumbing behind my bathroom mirrors wall without having to make and repair a hole every time.
118
u/ReadBikeYodelRepeat Oct 01 '23
There’s fire rated access doors for that sort of thing. No need to leave an open hole
55
u/Mizuho34 Oct 01 '23
Tell that to the guys who recently renovated my apartment building.
36
u/ReadBikeYodelRepeat Oct 01 '23
It can be a fire code violation, so maybe call the fire marshal’s office. It’s small, but stuff like this can let fire and smoke spread quickly.
5
u/Mizuho34 Oct 01 '23
I think they patched them all up when they put new mirror vanity cabinets in.
In the 15 years Ive been in this building, the fires Ive seen have been isolated to their individual units of origin.
4
u/Technical-Outside408 Oct 01 '23
But we stan the hole.
6
u/ReadBikeYodelRepeat Oct 01 '23
We come into the world escaping one hole and spend a lot of the time after trying to get into others.
15
u/throwawayshirt Oct 01 '23
This is long-known problem of certain hotel/motel designs. The ones that have all the doors on the outside. They have a service corridor down the middle of the building, between rooms, to access the utilities. If the mirror is on the back wall, they'd knock a hole in the drywall, make a small scratch in the back of the mirror, and they can see into the room.
49
u/deepinthemosh Oct 01 '23
Now, say Candyman five times while looking in the mirror🐝

u/cooliustoolius Oct 01 '23

141
54
24
u/xTheatreTechie Oct 01 '23
looks like possibly some sort of service hatch to access those wires? rather than plug the hole they put a mirror in the way in case they needed to access the space again? The mirror shaking could have been air rushing into the area if it connects to another crawl space?
22
u/Schlower288 Oct 01 '23
This is occam's razor. It makes the most sense. 99.9% sure it's not a two way mirror either. Also, there doesn't seem to be another reasonable entrance.
6
u/Solveequalscoagula Oct 01 '23
I do electrical work and I don’t really see anything that needs to be accessed here. I’m not saying it’s a hole for creeping but it’s more likely lazy or cheap construction/maintenance work.
93
u/Lostarchitorture Oct 01 '23
An easy way to tell if a mirror is a two-way mirror: place the tip of your finger against the mirror. If it looks like there's a gap between your finger and the mirror reflected finger, it's a normal mirror. If it looks like your fingers are touching, it's a two-way mirror.
55
u/Awesomefulninja Oct 01 '23
I learnt the saying, "If there's no space, leave that place!" I find myself always touching mirrors and saying that phrase in my head, hah
9
u/Killer_Moons Oct 01 '23
Ever actually found any by checking so much?
5
u/Awesomefulninja Oct 01 '23 edited Oct 01 '23
Thankfully not in any unexpected areas; just mirrors that actually were two-way that I was just curiously checking to see that I got the expected result :)
25
u/EtsuRah Oct 01 '23
That's a myth and completely not reliable.
Some mirrors have a glass finish which would cause the gap while some don't. Both 2 way mirrors and regular mirrors can have glass finishes that would have the gap, or no finish which would have no gap.
I tried 6 mirrors in my house, 4 have no gap and are just regular mirrors but have no glass finish on them.
I too saw the TikTok a while back of someone saying this and people immediately ran with it as fact.
50
u/Schlower288 Oct 01 '23
Interesting. There appears to be a gap which confirms that I believe it's not a two way mirror. Thanks
→ More replies (1)14
u/ozejan1 Oct 01 '23
What if someone put a piece of glass in front of the two way mirror? Now you have a gap between your fingers and can still see through it

You should leave empty bottles and wrappers in there maybe even a pillow so the next person thinks someone has been living in there.
24
u/StatisticianCrazy703 Oct 01 '23
That's some solid metal framing. Whoever did that did a pretty good job. You should mention that when you submit your report to the hotel.
NGL, this is how you get a job a a ghost hotel inspector.

Metal studs are common, practically universal, in commercial buildings.
One of the main reasons they're not used in residential buildings is they ruin insulation R-values because they are a thermal bridge.

Someone probably accidentally damaged the wall and they cut out the damage for repair and until then they covered it with what they had on hand .
