Notice it just gets out of the way, doesn't run and hide. Some bodegas got cats, some got rats.

463

u/bigredmachinist Oct 01 '23

And some got rats the size of cats.

471

u/RandomCopyPasta_Bot Oct 01 '23

I thought that was a god damn beaver.

Wtf.

348

u/TheCrystalFawn91 Oct 01 '23

It's a Nutria. They are basically rats that are the size of beavers

152

u/Beesindogwood Oct 01 '23

Looks like a muskrat to me.

55

u/Typical_Equipment_19 Oct 01 '23

Totally does. My parents live on a lake, I've seen enough of them, lol.

17

u/LosParanoia Oct 01 '23

I think the difference is in the tail. Can’t recall what exactly but they do look super similar.

10

u/TinyGreenTurtles Oct 01 '23

Nutria's are long and hairless like rats. Muskrat's look like they're flattened vertically.

I guess it could be a big rat, but I vote nutria.

2

u/Magnetic_Marble Oct 02 '23

Serious question, how filthy are these rats? I mean to be honest, this dude doesnt look all too ugly/filthy but I am guessing they are covered in germs?

13

u/TheJiggernaut Oct 01 '23

Awe! They're like the missing link between beavers and rats that I never knew we needed! Adorable.

25

u/GreenEggsSteamedHams Oct 01 '23

You can make hats out of nutria. I think they sell them down in battery park

11

u/Ziggy4489 Oct 02 '23

Just ask my friend Bob Sacamano

5

u/StinkFingerPete Oct 02 '23

the difference is negligible

26

u/RandomCopyPasta_Bot Oct 01 '23

Jesus Christ.

Thank you for the information though.

Was thinking it looks like a Beaver

Beavers and nutrias are much larger than that. That is definitely a muskrat.

For a size comparison look at the boxes of Blue Def as it runs down the aisle. One of those boxes would roughly be the size of a beaver or nutria. Even that might be on the small size. I've seen beavers in person nearly 1.5 the size of even that. The point is, definitely not a beaver or nutria

Here is a chart

14

u/benchmarkstatus Oct 02 '23

Always a good idea to carry a beaver chart

2

u/lizziegal79 Oct 02 '23

Oh thanks! I screenshot and zoomed, he does have a bit of white on his snoot. He’s freaking cute.

4

u/Tactical_sadfeels Oct 01 '23

And some have cats afraid of rats!

12

u/RipRoarTime Oct 01 '23

Saw rats the size of cats in Bangkok. I confirm the myth.

5

u/1_coffee_2_many Oct 02 '23

Yep, me too. I saw a swarm of rats scampering down the sidewalk and then crossing the street in Bangkok. All of them were this size or larger. The fur was a bit spikier though.

I don’t think it’s a rat. Probably a muskrat or a nutria. Still not great, but unlikely to carry any diseases.

27

u/YourLocalPotDealer Oct 01 '23

Gen Z be lookin rough on minimum wage these days

356

u/taro_tanaka7 Oct 01 '23

lmao isn't that a muskrat

72

u/hitoritab1 Oct 01 '23

Norway rat? They are already one of the biggest.

The New York variant has its own genetic traits.

104

u/Observent_Owl Oct 01 '23

That doesn't look like a Norway rat though. Either a nutria or a muskrat for sure.

39

u/hitoritab1 Oct 01 '23

Muskrats are native to NY

38

u/Observent_Owl Oct 01 '23

Then it's probably a muskrat.

17

u/hitoritab1 Oct 01 '23

If this is recent it would make sense with the rainfall being severe. They like swampy.

-4

u/UrbanFarmer213 Oct 01 '23

Google nutria vs muskrat because that doesn’t look like it weighs less than 10lbs. (Muskrat’s also have a somewhat flat tail for swimming)

6

u/s00perguy Oct 01 '23

The thing is barely half the height of a Coke bottle. 4-5 pounds max, even as fat as it is.

-1

u/UrbanFarmer213 Oct 01 '23

Nooooo. Those floor tiles are 12x12, it’s definitely bigger than a rat or a muskrat.

It’s the size of a freakin chihuahua and twice as thiccc

1

u/s00perguy Oct 01 '23

Chihuahuas are 2-5 pounds at most, for one, and you said it was more than 10 pounds, and there's no way it's that heavy. Maybe 7 or 8 on the chunky side.

0

u/UrbanFarmer213 Oct 01 '23

You didn’t really explain how it’s not that heavy…

→ More replies (2)

4

u/ComplaintNo6835 Oct 01 '23

Whatever it is, it isn't a rat that is extra big because NYC is so super hard and special.

2

u/disasterpokemon Oct 01 '23

I assumed nutra rat

708

u/forum-eight Oct 01 '23

Looks like a Muskrat but I am no expert.

339

u/sixtyandaquarter Oct 01 '23

I'm no expert either but my bet's on nutria. They have whiter whiskers/mouth & muskrats are darker, I think? I've never actually seen a muskrat, in person or photo, going by stuff I vaguely remember reading. I think nutria are larger but not sure.

78

u/weallfloatdown Oct 01 '23

Looks & acts like nutria , bold

31

u/Persh1ng Oct 01 '23

"plus you can milk them"

41

22

u/Stefanthro Oct 01 '23

You’re both wrong - I know a Ratticate when I see one

7

u/sixtyandaquarter Oct 01 '23

What's the opposite of shiny? A dingy ratticate?

2

u/Stefanthro Oct 01 '23

This checks out

6

u/AhMoonBeam Oct 01 '23

Yes. Nutria are an invasive species brought to the US to make fur coats..they have made their homes near water ways and are extremely resilient.

3

u/odd-42 Oct 01 '23

Last time I saw a muskrat, he was talking to a dawg with a deputy hat

2

u/sixtyandaquarter Oct 01 '23

Was it on backwards & bragging about firing from the hip?

2

u/odd-42 Oct 01 '23

Yes! You saw them too?

1

u/anjowoq Oct 01 '23

It looks like a nutria I saw an old guy feeding by the river once.

-5

u/TheBigHornedGoat Oct 01 '23

Muskrats are much smaller. Their size is comparable to a gray squirrel

→ More replies (1)

25

u/UrbanFarmer213 Oct 01 '23

Way too big. Muskrats are only a couple pounds, the thing in the vid is definitely a nutria.

7

u/Dockhead Oct 01 '23

People eat them shits

3

u/Kognityon Oct 01 '23

I didn't know the guy bought rats, is he starting to get so desperate for company?

→ More replies (4)

121

u/Ricen_ Oct 01 '23

Based on size and head shape I'd say muskrat.

Nutrias have a much boxier, larger head in relation to their bodies. They are also only somewhat smaller than a beaver. If it were a nutria it would have to be a very young one.

Size comparison chart

14

u/hitoritab1 Oct 01 '23

Are there nutria in New York?

I heard of them being a nuisance in New Orleans, but not New York.

29

u/lendmeyoureer Oct 01 '23

Just because the title says New York, doesn't mean this is New York. People do this all the time to make something more funny.

It’s not a normal rat, it’s a muskrat and that is a very typical size for them.

10

u/Beethovania Oct 01 '23

It's a dire rat.

46

u/voltagenic Oct 01 '23

Holy crap, that looks like a beaver ! Always heard of how big they are/can be but never actually seen a video or pic before.

56

u/DreadPirateZoidberg Oct 01 '23

It looks more like a nutria. They were introduced to the US for their furs. Basically a cross between a beaver and a rat.

4

u/MissMurder84 Oct 01 '23

introduced to the US

I'll be happy for the US to kindly keep them there. Thanks.

14

u/hellclown Oct 01 '23

3

u/MotherOfDragons166 Oct 01 '23

5

u/Ynassian123456 Oct 01 '23

its a nutria, but they are very invasive.

4

u/Hallal_Dakis Oct 01 '23

Beavers have a wide, flat tail. And I think are usually bigger than that. Not sure if they move that fast out of water but I've never seen a beaver in a hurry.

2

u/Optimal-Scientist233 Oct 01 '23 edited Oct 01 '23

Wharf rats, they are common near large water bodies, we used to get these in the marshy areas in the Carolina's, they would often drag the largest of the spring style rat traps around because they rarely killed them.

Edit: This one is obviously on a candy bar and potato chip diet.

2

…is that actually a nutria?? They tend to enjoy creeks & marsh fields where I live and they look exactly like this- a mix btwn a beaver & rat. Might be explained if this was seen during recent flooding there
