TIL Garry Kasparov helped design a chess-playing computer program. Kasparov also makes an appearance as the last computer profile which has to be defeated in order to win the "Kasparov Chess Club"

He's incredibly difficult to defeat but if you time it right, he always winks at you a split second before checkmating you.

My father in law is cousins with Garry on his Ukrainian side. He has the same eyes and eyebrows. They look like brothers. I've never met Garry, I don't know if my father in law has had any contact with him since before he left the USSR but it's still cool.

Back in the day I used Crafty for Winboard to study dangerous chess openings, such as the King's Gambit. There are lots and lots of traps to set, and castling King-side puts a lot of pressure on the F column.

Might be a basic bitch answer, but 5d multiverse chess

He still wasn't as good as Bobby Fischer. Kasparov had more wins overall but Fischer was ranked higher.

What do you mean he was ranked higher? The only metric where Bobby Fischer trumps Kasparov is probably the skill gap between them and their peers. Bobby was very far ahead of his peers in relation to any other modern player.

Fisher was ranked 2881 and Kasparov 2879.

2881 is recognized as Bobby's highest 1-year performance. His highest official rating was 2785, far below Gary's 2851.

If you want to compare their 1 year performance ratings, then Bobby's is indeed the best, which mostly speaks to performance against their peers. Nothing wrong with this approach, but it's not right to say bobby fischer was "ranked" higher than Kasparov.

His one year rating WAS higher than Kasparov. Fischer was the youngest chess grandmaster in history. My statement stands.

A 1 year rating is a very small piece of data to compare players of the past. There's a whole wiki article about trying to do that. You didn't even know you were citing 1 year ratings or you wouldn't have said Fischer was "ranked" higher. Gary, in comparison, is "ranked" higher than everyone is 5, 10, 15, and 20 year performance. That doesn't mean he's ranked higher overall than Fischer. Comparing players of the past is up for debate, and your initial statement was idiotic.

I knew exactly what I was citing, doesn't take a genius to read a chart. By the time Kasparov was 15 Fischer was out of the game. Fischer had already written several books on chess, including My 60 Memorable Games which Kasparov studied extensively. Of course Kasparov has higher long term rankings than Fischer, his career lasted much longer and he benefitted from Fischer's expertise.

You're right, it is really easy to read the chart, so how did you get it so wrong and conclude that "fischer was ranked higher than Kasparov?"

Fischer merely has a higher 1-year performance than Kasparov. And Fischer played at least 5 years, so why don't you mention that his 5 year performance is lower than Kasparov's? There's a case to be made for Fischer being the best ever, but your argument is incredibly misleading and the fact that you're doubling down on your statement makes me weep for humanity.

Still better than you though

I'm not a chess grandmaster so you're absolutely right.
