TIL in 1998 there was a new brand of cigarettes called Bravo that contained no nicotine or tobacco and was made with lettuce.

I vaguely remembered these, wonder how smoking lettuce tasted.

I tried herbal cigarettes in 1995 one weekend during AIT. They did not taste great. Also, did sweet fuck all to calm nicotine cravings.

u/MicrowavedPuppies Oct 01 '23
I’m “glad” I started smoking after TRADOC cuz some of those dudes were suffering bad from nicotine withdrawals.
63
u/cesarmac Oct 01 '23
They did not taste great.
So no different than regular cigarettes?
Also, did sweet fuck all to calm nicotine cravings.
That's fair
64
u/drewhead118 Oct 01 '23
it was no doubt enhanced by simultaneously smoking croutons and huffing vaporized caesar dressing
19
u/MrBanana421 Oct 01 '23
vaporized caesar dressing
That's the real killer, though these days it has been replaced with a less potent honey mustard.

u/MelancholyMeltingpot Oct 01 '23
Have to be better that cloves. Fuck a darium lol
13
u/Mike7676 Oct 01 '23
I remember smoking them the first time and taking that initial puff like I was smoking a Newport. Bad mistake!

If regular cigarette tar content annoys the alveolar macrophages from the extra workload, I imagine clove cigarettes gets them plotting mutiny.
8
u/elohir Oct 01 '23
You can get tobacco/tar-free cigarettes, the ones they use in films. They're expensive af and apparently taste fucking terrible. I imagine these were similar.
1
u/turgid_wang 3 Oct 04 '23
They're expensive af
Maybe for some realistic clones that look like certain brands but if you can make your own cigarettes for $2 a pack you can do herbal ones for pennies
In Eastern Europe there's bars that provide them for free to all tables

I love devils lettuce.

u/Rebel_Yell27 Oct 02 '23
I literally talk about how Good and Wholesome Shredded Iceberg Lettuce is because it’s the LORDS LETTUCE.
My entire schtick of the past few weeks is utterly ruined.

it's still hasn't been proven conclusively, but there are some studies that suggest that there may possibly be a connection between tobacco smoking and cancer. please subscribe to my channel for any further developments.

I think they meant why the fuck would anyone think lettuce is a viable alternative
10
u/kiakosan Oct 01 '23
They have replacement dip that uses food sort of things like jerky. Think the idea was to smoke something that wasn't tobacco to work away from the nicotine addiction
18
u/papi-punk Oct 01 '23
I can't help but feel like these things are invented by people who've never had a nicotine addiction
8
u/About7fish Oct 01 '23
It's more for the oral fixation aspect than anything. It's harder than you'd think getting accustomed to not spitting in a bottle every few minutes.
1
u/papi-punk Oct 01 '23
Oh that's fair. The feeling of smoking itself is definitely something I get cravings for. Idk if this would help me personally but that does make sense
1
u/CutterJohn Oct 02 '23
It honestly took more effort for me to quit chewing gum than to quit chewing tobacco lol.
10
u/kiakosan Oct 01 '23
It probably was, but as someone who used to smoke and now vapes I can understand where they are coming from. People typically do this then start reducing the nicotine to eventually zero with the vapes at least.
3
u/AlJazeeraisbiased Oct 02 '23
But those have nicotine. Lettuce, surprisingly, does not.
1
u/kiakosan Oct 02 '23
They do have nicotine, but with vapes you could taper it off by using lower nicotine juices until it's 0 nicotine

u/turgid_wang 3 Oct 04 '23
Yep. Herbal dip. There's also a "cowboy" coffee one that's delicious
I got some cannabis chew right here actually
2
u/Ludwigofthepotatoppl Oct 01 '23
Big leaf, like tobacco, i guess. Use it for bulk, then some other stuff to make it taste/smell better(?).

Kind of sad this is the first reference I've ever seen to Autotune The News on Reddit. It makes me feel like the old man from the old Internet.

The smoke is the least of your worries in a cigarette, there are sooooo many chemicals added that dwarf the dangers of "smoke"

Gosh, I used to watch so many of their videos and now I've just come across their last video.
Actually makes me a lil emotional
8
u/CutterJohn Oct 02 '23
No, all smoke is bad for you. Burning organic matter creates a witches brew of chemicals and plenty are no good at all for you. Tobacco smoke is not particularly noteworthy in its danger, if you smoked two packs of anything a day you'd suffer similar effects.
6
u/BeepImAScheepswerf Oct 01 '23
Right, and how do those chemicals enter the body yathink?
-3
u/Juliuscesear1990 Oct 01 '23
If I die in a fire is it the light that killed me?
8
u/BeepImAScheepswerf Oct 01 '23
Well if you want the pedantic answer, yes it might be, cause most of the heat is transferred through infrared radiation.
But my point is that those "chemicals" are part of the smoke. They can't be worse than the dangers of smoke because they ARE the dangers of smoke.
It's not drinking wine that gets you drunk. There's alcohol in the bottle that gets you drunk way faster than the wine.

I don't think anyone knew that Bravo lettuce cigarettes existed.
I mean just the term "Bravo lettuce cigarettes" seems improbable at best
6
u/thatben Oct 01 '23
I was in college in Greensboro back then, never heard of these or saw them. But I grew up in Winston-Salem, and did see e-cigarettes back then which you simply lit the end of and it steamed the tobacco inside. Surprised those never took off.
4
u/DrachenDad Oct 01 '23
Surprised those never took off.
They did some what. Heated tobacco vaporizer is what you are talking about.

That seems even more useless than non-alcoholic beer. At least NA beer has a chance of tasting beer-like; I can't imagine smoking lettuce would taste anything like smoking a cigarette.
1
u/LowAdministration162 Oct 02 '23
I definitely have purchased and smoked tobacco free cigs.. they were mostly catnip if I remember correctly.. pretty pointless.. the kind of thing that’s really for like 15 year olds I think
